The Unicorn and Other Poems by Anne Morrow Lindbergh
2.0
I thrifted this yesterday. Do I regret buying it if I didn't enjoy it? No, the cover is nice to look at. Also it was $2.
Honestly, I'm not smart enough for this, this type of poetry takes up too much brainpower for me. I want to be able to at least somewhat understand it.
Although, I did like the little mermaid and the unicorn poem. there was a few about death and grief as well that were somewhat comforting. At least the parts I could understand from them.

A very hard-to-focus-on read. It doesn't help that i've been struggling lately to fully concentrate on one thing, including reading. But other than that, it was very poetic, lyrical. It was a little difficult to understand with the back and forth povs and hardly any indication of them changing. I only caught on half way through the book on what it was that marked the pov change lol
This book initially caught my eye at the thrift store. The cover (obviously) and the name intrigued me. Sexing the cherry? What does that mean exactly? I know now, because I read the book but I'm still struggling to comprehend how that represents the story as a whole. There is a lot of extra online reading that needs to be done after finishing this because its all over the place and deals with so many different themes (time, space, reincarnation, living in the present, love, etc)!!!
It was surprisingly philosophical. I've been getting back into exploring this lately, so I picked this up at the perfect time. Although, I do wish it didn't take up so much of my concentration lol. I was going to say it was unlike anything i've ever read before but it can be compared to Thrust by Lidia Yuknavitch. I guess because of the different stories that take place in the novel as well as time travelling. These books are a struggle to read but I feel like I get something out of them, so I will continue to pick them up and hope that they eventually become easier reads.
So overall, three stars because this was a bit more of a challenging read than what i'm used to. And an extra .5 because I did thoroughly enjoy its themes and i'm looking forward to reading more books that focus on these themes!

This was a very tough read, not in terms of structure and wording but because of its contents. Shadow work has always interested me, since I first heard about it. I bought this book 3 years ago, read a few pages and never picked it up again. I've been getting into self discovery and care lately and I thought this would be perfect to pick up now.
It was promising in the beginning and it did teach me a lot but it began to feel repetitive, like I wasn't learning anything new and just hearing the same thing over and over again. I'd say its a good opener for shadow work because it's easy and doesn't overwhelm you with a lot of information. But I know I will probably end up reading another book on this topic eventually.
Deep inner healing is scary!! I thought I had been doing it since I was 12 but I never thought to really look back on things that have affected me from a young age till more recently. It was always more of a work-on-whats-going-on-now kind of ordeal. + We are constantly changing and learning things about ourselves and those around us!
Overall, I don't regret reading this and putting so many notes and annotations into it, but I wish the information wasn't so repetitive!

I’m in awe of this story! I loved everything about it.
I had a feeling I would love it but I didn’t know it would be this much, it seriously exceeded my expectations. It was beautifully written and the story flowed perfectly.

"We're on a planet sustained by nothing, carried through pure space by a willful star made of fire and in constant ebullition. We're travellers covering traveling grounds. Going, always going."
Beautiful, although I so deeply wish I could understand poetry more without having to pause and do an in depth analysis of every line. It is a form of art that I appreciate (which is why I continue to try and read it) but that I have trouble understanding. It really is like another language. Its not something I read often because I literally stare at the pages like this

What does everyone see in this book?! It’s been almost a month and I’m still not even halfway through. And I’ve been trying so hard. There might’ve been some useful information in here but I literally just can’t continue anymore.

what a beautiful story! i’ve come across this book many times in the last year and never felt the need to read it, i randomly found it for $3 at the thrift and gave it a shot and i fell in love with circe. The story was written so well and not too hard to understand (coming from the pov of someone who doesn’t know a lot about greek mythology.)
not sure about how to rate this because i wasn’t that sad when i finished it but i just liked the story and writing hehe

julia reminded me of the word paraphrasing and that is literally what was going on over here.
there is sort of this repetitiveness in both uzumaki and tomie. But i think the difference between the two is that in uzumaki, the result of the curse differentiated from time to time (kinda). in contrast, tomie just felt like the same story over and over again but with a small twist each time. i would've definitely rated this higher if it were shorter.
also, tomie always used the same name and people were STILL getting cursed by her?? like was she not on the news??? i mean i guess that could be part of her curse but it just made me laugh
but other than that, I gave an extra star for the fantastic artwork + the gore & horror that junji ito is able to present in his stories. i genuinely cannot understand how he is able to produce such an uneasy feeling through JUST drawings and words. that is TALENT
