Sexing the Cherry by Jeanette Winterson
3.0
3.5
A very hard-to-focus-on read. It doesn't help that i've been struggling lately to fully concentrate on one thing, including reading. But other than that, it was very poetic, lyrical. It was a little difficult to understand with the back and forth povs and hardly any indication of them changing. I only caught on half way through the book on what it was that marked the pov change lol
This book initially caught my eye at the thrift store. The cover (obviously) and the name intrigued me. Sexing the cherry? What does that mean exactly? I know now, because I read the book but I'm still struggling to comprehend how that represents the story as a whole. There is a lot of extra online reading that needs to be done after finishing this because its all over the place and deals with so many different themes (time, space, reincarnation, living in the present, love, etc)!!!
It was surprisingly philosophical. I've been getting back into exploring this lately, so I picked this up at the perfect time. Although, I do wish it didn't take up so much of my concentration lol. I was going to say it was unlike anything i've ever read before but it can be compared to Thrust by Lidia Yuknavitch. I guess because of the different stories that take place in the novel as well as time travelling. These books are a struggle to read but I feel like I get something out of them, so I will continue to pick them up and hope that they eventually become easier reads.
So overall, three stars because this was a bit more of a challenging read than what i'm used to. And an extra .5 because I did thoroughly enjoy its themes and i'm looking forward to reading more books that focus on these themes!
