What Lies Between Us by John Marrs

After finishing this book I’m left with a feeling of meh. Nothing too good to say or too bad just meh. The funny thing is I thought the story leading up to the ending was pretty intriguing but once the ending happened I felt nothing, which is not a good feeling at the end of a thriller. At the end of John Marrs’s books I usually am like WHAT THE HELL JUST HAPPENED?!!?!!? So I’m kind of disappointed because I know what this author is capable of and he didn’t meet his own standards of what a shocking thriller could be.

There’s no contained thriller that I wouldn’t enjoy. The premise of a killer being hidden among regular people and the audience doesn’t know who’s who is just so interesting. This thriller really flew by, there was no boring moment and each page I felt closer to finally figuring out the mystery. I think the killer was unexpected and C.L. Taylor did a fantastic job with leaving clues, only if you looked close enough. An interesting take on a very popular trope.

This is a very ambitious plot for a short story but it really worked. I don’t even want to give away any details about the plot because the book is 100 pages, any detail is a major spoiler. By the end of this book I just felt numb and couldn’t help but to think about how cruel the government is for the way they test immigrants wanting citizenship. Seeing how Idir deals with the traumatic events was just depressingly sad. An amazing short story!

THIS BOOK WAS SO BAD LIKE LAUGHABLY BAD! I genuinely can’t believe people like this book. The plot twist was such a cop out and probably was done so the author can write sequels for these characters that no one cares about. The characters did not feel like real people that felt like cliches and that’s it. The author pulled on the teen archetypes that John Hughes did in The Breakfast Club but instead of delving deep into who the characters are as people and not who society sees them, Karen Mc. Manus did absolutely nothing. She did not develop these characters to be more than their cliches. She also does not know how to write teenagers. One character in this book had an ipod in 2017!?!!? Nate and Bronwyn’s relationship was such a bore and I couldn’t bring myself to care. Bad boy and good girl trope could be great when done well but again this author does not have the writing skill to pull it off. The only enjoyable feeling I had while reading this book was making fun of it.

This book was just pure fun. Enemies to lovers, faking dating, and just plain mess like sign me up. This book perfectly balances it’s rom com teen drama hijinks with a very heartwarming love story. Like I was straight up giggling when the main couple kissed at the end. I literally had so much fun while reading this book. I love starting the year off with such an amazing read that I feel like everyone will enjoy. Scottie + Irene + their cheesy 80’s romantic gestures = a happy giggly satisfied reader.

This is definitely not a fun light hearted romance read and I think, if like me, you go into this book thinking that you will be rudely awakened. This book was very enlightening when it came to the main character Anna’s struggles dealing with her family, her career, and her autism. I truly felt her pain when she was describing how she spends everyday pretending to be someone else to please others and how much that takes a tole on her. It was heartwarming to see her find happiness in Quan. But I felt this book was more realistic than other romance books and problems were not swept under the rug with a huge romantic gesture in the end and then a tooth rotting sweet epilogue, it took actual time and work. I guess I wasn’t expecting that so it did surprise me. I appreciated this perspective because in real life that’s what usually happens but I read books for escapism not realism so... This book was good, I read it at an Olympic speed level but I felt that I didn’t get that heart fluttering cutesy feeling that I usually get during Hoang’s other books in this series. But definitely not a disappointing read just different.
