Not My Problem by Ciara Smyth
4.0
I love the ragtag group that is Aideen, Meabh, and Kavi. Aideen as a character was so fascinating because she was a people pleaser at her core and she always was afraid of speaking up for herself. I feel like she was so burdened with her mother’s drinking problems which is a lot for a sixteen year old. I loved how much she cared about others even it wasn’t reciprocated. She was a mess to say the least but she was my mess. I feel like this whole book I waiting for Aideen to realize that the reason why she was hyper focused on fixing everyone else’s was to avoid fixing her own. And when she finally did I couldn’t be more happier. I did wish we got a little more of the romance between Aideen and Meabh. Ciara Smyth gave me only a sprinkle of them when I wanted a whole bucket.
The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller

I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this book but also disappointed that I didn’t love this book the way everyone adores it. I really thought by the end I would be balling my eyes out but no tears were shed. This is coming from someone who has cried over multiple books for many different reasons. Patroclus and Achilles are thee star crossed lovers. Romeo and Juliet, who?
More Happy Than Not by Adam Silvera

I feel like I was supposed to leave this book with a profound meaningful message that will stick me for years to come but I just didn’t care, oh well. This book was extremely sad and everything Aaron endured was heartbreaking. But it almost felt like trauma for trauma sake. I never felt connected with the pain the main character felt or with him at all. I wish I did but I felt heavily disconnected with this book the whole time I was reading it.
History Is All You Left Me by Adam Silvera

I don’t know what kind of sorcery Adam Silvera books have to make them so short in length but take ages for me to finish. I did enjoy this book more than More Happy than Not but only by a small margin. Griffin was a main character that wasn’t entirely likeable but he was also grieving his ex-boyfriend and best friend that he thought would always be with him. This book felt less depressing than his debut but still very sad. It got very monotonous and repetitive at a point. The story was dragging on even though it was less than 300 pages. Something just felt missing with this book because I always love YA contemporaries dealing with grief but I just wasn’t feeling it. I don’t know if it’s Adam Silvera’s writing or his characters but it’s missing that spark from me. Crossing my fingers that I love They Both Die at the End.
They Both Die at the End by Adam Silvera

FINALLY AN ADAM SILVERA BOOK THAT I ACTUALLY LIKE! I would’ve been sick if I hated this book because I somehow got a signed copy and everyone loves this book. My issues with the other two Adam Silvera books I’ve read is that it’s filled with pretentious characters and forced deep lines. He tries too hard to make his books have powerful messages instead of letting the story speak for itself. They Both Die at the End was the story that he let speak for itself. I flew through this book. Mateo and Rufus were both characters that have experienced death of family members. Now they have to deal with the fact they will be dead by the end of the day. Their relationship felt very natural and I thought it was so sweet that even on your last day on Earth you can still experience your first love. I loved the dual POV from Mateo and Rufus and other perspectives from people that were intertwined with the story. It expanded the world and made it feel more real. By the end of this book I didn’t want these characters to die and I felt myself wanting the title to be one big lie.
A Song of Wraiths and Ruin by Roseanne A. Brown

Characters eating fufu in a YA fantasy I prayed for times like this. But seriously this book was amazing from start to finish. I love in fantasy books when one character is tasked to kill someone but they fall in love instead. Anxiety representation from a Black male character in a YA fantasy was something I never thought I read. Malik was the soft Black boy representation we all needed. Karina was a character that really grew on me. At first I saw her as a irresponsible royal brat but then I realized that she had such a heart of gold that she was scared to open up. Once the action started to pick up I found myself really compelled to keep reading until I was at the final page.
The Island by Adrian McKinty

THIS BOOK GAVE ME HEART PALPATIONS! I love a bad ass female led survival thriller and this gave me exactly that. Heather was THAT bitch and watching her wreak havoc on this crazy family was incredible. Reading this book felt like watching a movie, Adrian McKinty had such vivid descriptions that I could see exactly what he was picturing when writing this book. This book was a page turner to say the least, I couldn’t stop until I knew how the story concluded. My 2022 anticipated new thriller releases have been duds so far but this was the diamond in the ruff.
Not So Pure and Simple by Lamar Giles

The second hand embarrassment I experienced while reading this book took years off my life. This book was also laugh at loud funny at points so it was worth it. This story felt so refreshing because not many books in YA center their main characters unlearning certain ideas that society has pushed on them. The conversation about toxic masculinity, rape, sexual assault, and teen pregnancy was done in a way that I felt teens reading this could relate to and learn from. Having the main character, Del, participate in this culture that teaches young boys that women are prizes you could win over by being the “nice” guy and then unlearn this thinking was actually so interesting to read from. I thought this was very realistic because many boys this age are prone to think like this but reading from this perspective was very new to me. Del’s growth was well developed and we saw him actually realize how his actions were entirely wrong. Usually in teen romances where the love interest was lying to the main character to get with her we get an apology and that’s it. With this book I actually felt the author took the time for Del to understand how he was being dishonest and manipulative. This was honestly just so well done.
People We Meet on Vacation by Emily Henry

“you asked me what I’d be willing to give up for you, and now i know the answer is: everything.” THE MOMENT I STARTED READING THIS BOOK I FELL IN LOVE! I wanted to love Beach Read so bad but I really hated it. I couldn’t be more happy that Emily Henry came through with a romance that I just knew was going to be a five stars from the prologue. Alex and Poppy just fit they were believable as best friends and even more believable as a couple. Usually when there’s two timelines in books I hate one timeline but flashing back to each vacation was just perfection. I learned so much about their friendship dynamic and how they spent twelve years not realizing/acting on their true feelings for each other. This romance just felt meant to be and hearing Alex call Poppy his home at the end brought tears to my eyes. This was just everything. ALEX AND POPPY ARE TWO IDIOTS IN LOVE WHAT MORE CAN I SAY!
