The Only Girl in Town by Ally Condie

I love a book with short chapters. I feel like I'm speed reading! If you also love short chapters, this is the book for you. They may be the shortest chapters I've ever encountered.
I really liked the idea of this book and enjoyed my time reading it, but by the end it felt...anticlimactic. I didn't feel the pay off was enough for the journey.
(and yes, I understand the allegory of it all, it just didn't work for me)

Where the Library Hides by Isabel IbaƱez

A solid conclusion to such a fun duology! I loved Inez, I loved the Egypt setting.
Content: some language, violence, one or two vague open door scenes.

The Secret of Moonrise Manor by Stephanie Bearce

This was a really fun murder/art theft mystery. Raven, the protagonist, reminded me a lot of Flavia de Luce, a protagonist from one of my favorite mystery series. She's very matter of fact, confident, and no nonsense.
I also loved Ravens little group of friends. They each brought something fun and interesting to the table and everyone's talents combined to help them solve their mysteries.
I look forward to seeing what comes next for Raven Gallows!

The Games Gods Play by Abigail Owen

This is being marketed as Percy Jackson x Hunger Games for an adult audience. While I agree, I think a better comparison would be Lore by Alexandra Bracken x Hunger Games.
While long, this book didn't feel like it had anything frivolous or extra that needed cutting. I enjoyed every part of it. The romance was a bit on the cheesy side for my tastes (I've heard it called a slow burn but it felt like instalove to me).
I really like Lyra and her journey. Hades was also really likeable (but again, a bit cheesy for me). And I liked the cast of side characters as well.
Content: lots of language, violence/gore, one open door love scene.

Better Than Revenge by Kasie West

I love Kasie West's YA romances. They're always so sweet and swoony, and Better Than Revenge was no exception. Finley was really relatable and fierce and I loved her. Theo was charming and lovable and I enjoyed seeing their relationship play out. I also loved Finley's group of friends, and only wish there had been a bit more development on that end..
All in all, a quick, fun read that had me yearning to hit the beach!
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for letting me read an eARC for review.

The Most Wonderful Crime of the Year by Ally Carter

This was a lot of fun! And even though I didn't have time to read it before/during Christmas, I didn't care. The Clue/Christie vibes were perfect.

Reread 2024:
I read this book years ago and remember loving it then.
Well this time I loved it again! Hattie, a 16-year-old orphan, gets willed some land in Montana by her uncle. The catch? He was trying to stake his claim on the land, so she had to meet all the requirements to prove up the land in order to keep it.
My goodness, this book has so much heart. Hattie and her little community are so easy to cheer for.
All of this set near the end of the first world war makes for an absolutely amazing read. I'm recommending it to my ten-year-old who has been loving these kinds of books lately.
