The Midnight Library by Matt Haig

3.5

Update: changed rating from 4 to 3.5. Honestly, was it really THAT mindblowing?

If 'The Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind', a happier version of '13 Reasons Why', 'The Butterfly Effect' and the quote 'Happiness Only Real When Shared' from Into the Wild had a baby... this would be it. And I LOVED IT!

I thought I hated this book at first, I found it hard to get into and didn't like the she-perspective as it made it harder to use my imagination. I thought it was gonna be depressing and horrible, like 13 Reasons Why, but it really wasn't like that at all!

Page by page, the book grew on me and as the storyline progressed I just fell in love with it. Loved the philosophy references as well. Would highly recommend this book!

Also: the movie has SO much potential to become amazing, and I really really hope they're taking notes from the cinematography in 'The Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind', because it'd fit the story perfectly. Can't wait for it to come out.

After reading The Silent Patient, I thought: I hate it, but I love it. After finishing this story, however, I just hate it. And I really really wanted to like it, but I don't.

The first half of the book was quite slow, filled with anxious feelings towards people who weren't really relevant to the story (Henry, I'm looking at you). Then, Alex really forcibly tried to push the idea of a cult, which I must say I did believe, but it was too obvious (so couldn't be true). The actual outcome was just.. weird. It felt random, rushed, not thought-through.

I'm just disappointed. I rate it a 2 out of 5.

Such a cute little book. I can definitely imagine myself reading this to my future children!

Although I first learned about Narnia through the movie, I really enjoyed reading the original story. Looking forward to reading the rest of the series and I give 3.5 stars to this one!

I listened to the audiobook while decluttering and really enjoyed this book. Marie has an interesting view on the world and I love how she feels like everything has its own space and time in your life.

Although I didn't completely agree with everything she said, I adopted many of her tips into my life and I must say: it has, in fact, changed my life. Now, 5 years later, my wardrobe is still neatly folded and I still won't keep things that bring me joy. I'd recommend it to anyone in need of some organization in their life.

Did not finish book. Stopped at 8%.
DNF on page 32. I know this is extremely early, but honestly the writing style was just NOT for me and it made me not look forward to reading every day.

Throughout most of the book, I thought I didn't like it. I thought it would probably be a 3/5 because the story developed slow at times and it was hard to imagine what their world must look like, therefore I didn't have any emotions about it.

But then I read the final sentence and realized what I just read. I have so many emotions I don't know how to deal with. Honestly I don't think I'll forget this book any time soon and I'll probably need a few days to recover.

Gotta give this one a 5/5 - I ugly cried. (JK, I'm STILL ugly crying)

I just finished reading this book for the second time, and sobbed like I didn’t know what was about to happen.

A bit childish and simple at times, yet beautiful, emotional and grasping.

I loved how John managed to turn a horribly sad topic around, and even made me giggle at times. He shows that books about cancer don’t have to be all about how bad living with it is.

I just wish he wrote a dang ending! What happened to Hazel, John?!
