Honestly, I couldn't bring myself to give a shit about any of the characters. The pacing was slow. And when the romance got introduced I audibly groaned because insta-love between two characters you don't care about is right below reading about heavily romanticized toxic relationships on the tier of romance in books. If you can't tell by now, this book was certainly not for me.

This book totally made me realize I was a lesbian when I thought 'wow, Mare Barrow can electrocute me and I wouldn't complain.'

Besides that, this is the book that really got me into fantasy and I will never forget it for that. But why do people like Cal? Or Maven? They can catch my hands any day of the week. Honestly, Mare might be dumb but in my opinion, she deserves better. I think I'm letting some of my bitterness from King's Cage seep in, but hey. Maven sucks.

(1.4 star, DNF'd 234 pages in) Here we go. I had to find my notes for this.

I originally rated this a two star, but in the seven minutes since I've put down my rating I've been thinking about other books I've rated two stars and why I rated them two stars and realized that this needed to be bumped down.

First of all, the characters. I was not interested in any of them. They all had the same sort of outline. They're fleeing from some kind of dark past and they all ended up in the same place that made them edgy. I could connect with none of the characters and most of them were infuriating in some kind of way.

Next the romances that had just started blooming once I DNF'd it. Literally all of them had the same sort of dynamic. Big bad brooding guy with a character that's seems harmless but is not so harmless. Matthias and Nina infuriated me most of all. Matthias was a hard-headed bigot who couldn't see the other side of things if somebody took his eyes and chucked him to the other side of the world. Nina was the closest thing to a likable character that was in this book. I was honestly just waiting for Matthias to get chucked overboard.

Next, the writing. I usually don't criticize writing style because it's never really bothered me. I do have a preference, but it doesn't particularly bother me if it's bland. But holy hell for some reason it just irked me in this book how bland the writing was.

The jokes came off as forced and when a character was described as 'doubling over from laughter' I was like 'honey, where' and the interactions between characters provided no chemistry. When it was revealed that Kaz was having feelings for Inej, I was like 'nope, fuck this' and almost yeeted the book out the window. I didn't because it's snowing up a storm outside and I don't want to break my window and freeze my ass off, and this is a library book.

Overall, I was surprised of how much this book bored me. It seemed right up my alley but what I got was an overhyped book that had potential, but never explored it. And please don't pull the 'well, it gets better' card with me. I read 50% of this book. If I wasn't interested by then, it wasn't going to get better. For me, this was a waste of time and I would not recommend it.

I’m DNF’ing this. Not because it’s bad, no. As far as I read, it was really good, but it’s just really dense and none of the information is really processing. I just don’t think I’m in the mood for an adult fantasy book right now.

So this book was really a 3.5 star, but I always round my reviews based on how you would round in math, so that's why it's rated a four star.

Now, my enjoyment of this was really a 3-star. And usually, I rate according to my enjoyment because my enjoyment usually presents what I think of the over all quality of the book. But that's not always the case. For example, one book a read a while ago was a three star enjoyment, but I had problems with how a certain character and their mental health issues were handled so I bumped it down to a 2-star. With this book, even though my enjoyment was a 3-star I felt like the quality deserved a higher rating.

So, for my review lets state the fact that this is a THICC book, and even though we love her for it, 800-whatever pages is a lot and it's hard to keep a person interested over that entire time. It took me 3 days to read the first one hundred pages, which is not bad by any standard, it's just not how I read. Now the books I usually read are 300-500 pages. In three days, I'm either done with the book or at least half way done with the book. So when I wasn't at least 300 pages in by three days, I was a little discouraged and almost thought about putting down. Then the second part of the book (and beginning of the third part) I was speeding through it. Then near the end of the book I was reading it slowly again. Even though it was a task to get through, it was fun.

I found most of the characters pretty interesting, but some of the POV's really just sent me to sleep. But that's bound to happen with me. Every book I've read with multiple point of views has always had one or two that bores me. I never really get onto an author for writing multiple point of views because as somebody who likes to write in their spare time, it's fun.

I really thought most of the story lines were interesting. Though I was a bit disappointed that Tane's dragon rider storyline didn't go on a bit longer. I really wanted to see Turosa get what was coming to him.

I do recommend this for people who like adult fantasy. It had likeable characters, interesting story lines, and a wonderful setting. I feel like if you like YA fantasy (like me), it might be a bit harder for you to get into the book.
