short book of poetry about black british identity and history. it was a quick read. i think i need to do some research on the historical event which is focused on throughout the collection to gain more from it.

This collection of poetry was beautifully narrated by the author. I shamefully didn’t know about the 1981 New Cross Fire... wow I do now. Touching poems inspired by this and more recent tragedies, including Grenfell. I’d really recommend this book- you can of course read it, but I adored the audiobook.

bernard's writing was really vulnerable and honest- I really loved it. I kind of wish I heard it aurally though; this was very much poetry that works really well as spoken verse I think. also this was really good as it showcased Black British voices, and also it actually helped me learn about the injustice of Grenfell and racial justice properly for the first time (5 years later- which is regrettable). this was a collection rooted on the ground, from the voice of a very human person. i like that about poetry- I felt really connected to bernard as a person in their writing because of that.

I didn't understand the context of some poems but whatever I understood was wonderful. I recommend listening to the audiobook while reading it. It would make for a heart wrenching experience.
