Very nice and gripping in some places but over-all very easy/non-imaginative and of course the racial stereotypes are jarring.

A solid fantasy story but geez the racism and xenophobia just do not look good in this day and age.

I thought the take of not focusing on the Pevensies as the main characters was an interesting choice, but the very cliche fairytale ending was a bit much. The "turns out he was a prince the whole time!" was expected and the "And then the 2 main characters got married when they grew up and they lived and argued happily ever after" was too much for me. I feel like Aravis's character was belittled down to "she's a girl and therefore can't do anything useful" by the end, and both horses didn't seem all that important. For a book called "The Horse and His Boy" the horse doesn't seem to do much at the end.

This, the third book in the Chronicles of Narnia, is an entertaining stand alone tell. There are mentions of other parts of the series, but that simply adds to the story, it doesn't hinder it. The characters are likeable and entertaining and the story has enough twists and turns to keep one engaged and rooting for the characters.

I read this with the 12yo and this is his review:

“I like how it crosses over with the Lion the witch and the wardrobe, but it can be confusing at times, and it is a bit slow sometimes as well. Overall I did like it”

The Horse and His Boy (The Chronicles of Narnia #5 or #3)
By CS Lewis

Fantasy, children's fantasy

My rating: ⭐️⭐️💫

Shasta, and talking Narnia horse, Bree, run away. They quickly meet another pair, Aravis and Hwin. This story tells their adventures heading to Narnia, and the war they must endure.

Will they gain their freedom or will obstacles stand kn their way?

❤️ Shasta's story arc is good in my opinion. I liked his growth. And I enjoyed his friendship with Aravis.

💔 I didn't enjoy this story. I liked the ending, but it didn't compare to ones previously. In general, I found this story too far removed from Narnia. It almost gave me a Lord of the Rings vibe instead. And although I like Lord of the Rings, this felt out of place for Narnia and with a far weakened plot. I'm not sure if this would feel more in place read in publication order as book 5. If it does, I'll add an edit.

🎀 I read these books in publication order with my dad as a child and have been interested in re-reading as an adult. The series I got put them in chronological order, so I'm reading them chronologically this time. Curious which way flows better. At this point, I'm not sure how this story flows. It took place while the kids were ruling Narnia, but it didn't feel like it flowed well as book 3.
