I may give this another try at a later date. It didn't hook me the way some of the other Nightside stories did.

I love John Taylor and his escapades in the Nightside, they are crazy. There's no lack of action, that's for sure, or lack of excellent secondary characters that seem to appear in the overall story. This is not a nice place full of good people, there is however, some morally gray folks with some sense of good and bad, and a lot of magical powers running through most. It makes for great reading. It's complete escapism.

I thought I could handle the repeated "I opened my third eye. My private eye." but I can't. It's just too ridiculous--like a dad joke gone horribly awry. Fun concept, just the PI having a "private eye" was beyond my ability to ignore. Tossed me out of the story immediately every single time. I made it to the second book, but by chapter 5 I was done. Too much of a minorly silly thing that would have worked (perhaps) the first time in the first book.

So many amazing ideas in this book that could have been fleshed out into full length novel. Ideas that were instead monologued by the main character and glossed over in paragraphs. It was frustrating. I bought the books as a set and will probably read them all but the first two have been pretty disappointing.

I really enjoyed this book and have become more invested in the characters and this series. I graded the first book harshly, but I really enjoy these.

Mini-Review:

The main story line about JT's parents keep me hooked. I liked how minor details get flushed out more in this one. I can't help but imagine a world that smashes together many sci-fi/fantasy elements from the 70's-80's. It's a bizarre collage that draws out a range of responses from laughter to grimaces of disdain.

On one hand, I want to zap all of the books to find out what's going to happen but there are repetitive bits that will detract from the story if I don't take a break or two between stories. I want to know more about Nightside and JT's gift. Coming up next, book 3!
