I really liked this graphic novel but it does feel like fury porn. However, the environment and society is an excellent commentary on issues of race (presented through the different species), as well as, illustrating the awful circumstances of a government that subscribes to homophobia. So in summary, don't discount it based on the cover or the racy depictions within the first few pages.

Unnatural is an erotic dystopian mystery comic with anthropomorphized animals and more than one sinister organization. There's a lot going on in the four issues that comprise this first volume, out November 21st.
The book opens with Leslie, a humanoid pig, making out with her pillow while dreaming about having sexytimes with a mysterious white wolf. Then her roommate, a mouse named Trish, wakes her up and makes her go to work. As the story progresses, we learn about the Reproduction Program, a government initiative set up to match people of the same species/race for marriage and procreation. Interspecies relationships are against the law and "unnatural," thus the title of the series.
...
I read this twice, because there's a lot going on that makes sense once you get some of the missing pieces revealed in issue 4, but I'd also really like to talk to other people once you read it. I have theories!

A new potential favorite graphic novel series! These volumes were so much fun! I'm really loving the magical prophetic elements combined with the political upheaval and discourse. I'm really excited to see where this series goes. I definitely recommend this series if you enjoy Saga, The Wicked + The Divine, and the new Runaways.

Cool artwork, kind of vaguely Orwellian. But like, Orwellian smut.

Unnatural works on a number of levels but will no doubt appeal the most in the fact that you can substitute whatever your “unnatural”ness is. If you’re queer, politically opposed to your current government, if you are single and have no interest in finding a partner and doing the whole “marriage thing”… whatever it is that you feel makes you different from the crowd… you can substitute that for the issues in Unnatural and in doing so feel a connection that may well make the overall comic a much stronger personal experience for you. There are times when viewing injustices in the world can be a bit overpowering and emotionally draining, Unnatural gives us a chance to tackle some of those issues in an alternate setting… with just enough separation from reality to make it feel less personally impactful… yet still familiar enough for us to consider the issues seriously.
Wonderfully illustrated and compassionately written, Unnatural is a title that can be many things to many different people. Grab a copy and find out what it means to you
