(( audiobook ))
This was entertaining enough as an audiobook and kept me occupied, but I don’t think I’d have enjoyed it very much in written form.
So. Many. Coincidences.

I received this book in a Goodreads giveaway in exchange for a fair review. I have read a few of this author's books and was excited to have a go at this one. It started off slow for me, well past my 100 page rule. In fact, this lasted for more than 3/4 of the book. I didn't find myself even cheering for the "good guys"...until I did. The twist was revealed, the action heated up and I was happy with the ending, which is not always the same as a happy ending, but more important, I feel, as a reader. I am glad I stuck with it and look forward to reading more by Linwood Barclay!

I didn’t like this book and it comes down to how few male authors I’ve been reading off late. The way they write is just different—and wrong. I don’t know why male authors feel like they HAVE TO make their stories lurid and leery. And to involve 15 year old children in that crap too? You don’t have to work so hard to demonstrate an evil character is evil.
You know what frustrates me the most? People are horrible and horrendous, and traumatic things happen on the daily to people, especially young girls. But what a lot of male authors get wrong is that they include assault and worse in their books but their female characters just…shrug it off? They’re not shown dealing with the trauma of these incidents and acts which gives people the false assumption that these occurrences weren’t that bad. Which is nonsense, of course. That seeps into real life mentality which is a huge problem.
I think the fact that the author seemed to revel in cheap thrills annoyed me the most about the book. The girls were all pretty but we never knew what the guys looked like. Most of the characters were cardboard cutouts of 80s action films. Only Miles was slightly different but also not a saint.
Was the book interesting? It would have been if it risen above regressive cliches.

From the start this had me hooked (clearly bc I read in one day). Super twisty and exciting but in a fun how is this going to come together way which I really loved.

A change of scenery. A change of characters. Complex interactions, mystery, humour and violence, that come together as the climax approaches. Well crafted and compelling.

Miles is a software multi millionaire who has Huntington’s disease and wants to find out if he has any next of kin from when he was a sperm donor and leave them his fortune. He begins to search for them and discovers several. Have mysteriously disappeared.
Interesting plot line with a nice twist, but it didn’t compel me to read at a fast pace.

This book was entertaining enough to get me through a couple of hot summer days when I didn't want to do anything else. The plot was *just* interesting enough that I finished the book, but I found the writing and the characters flat and one-dimensional. There was enough action and twists to hold my attention, but a lot of it was absurd. I liked Elevator Pitch better.

Gave me chills.
Not in a creepy way, just uncomfortable on how when a shitty thing happens to a person and that person wants to do good, but then someone else doesn’t like it. People are greedy.
Twisty twist, and twist. Antagonist is reminiscent of Epstein himself. Weirdly more egotistical though.
This book was fucked up. What you think is happening isn’t happening then something els is actually going on… fucked.
