I had mixed feelings about this novel. It was very dark, which I was not expecting at all. It took a while to capture my interest and when it finally did it was just to see if the heroine and another character escaped brutality (because I needed a happy ending badly). There isn't much joking, which I prefer to lighten up a dark tale. I don't know if I will read the rest of the series...

I think this is my second or third reread. sometimes I'm just a sucker for nostalgic urban fantasy.
stray follows faythe, a shifter who turns into a tabby cat. she is called back to her "pride" aka pack when tabbies start getting kidnapped. sucked back into her ranch, we see old feelings & conflicts arise between faythe, her family, and her ex boyfriend, marc. faythe is probably one of the least liked fmcs - she's selfish, stubborn & impulsive. she can make rash, unwise decisions. I dislike these things about her too, but I just kind of like having an fmc that's imperfect. there's definitely some aspects of this book that doesn't agree well, and overall, I find the way this author writes about SA to be a bit problematic, I enjoy this story and it has a surprising bit of political intrigue for an urban fantasy (this continues to build throughout the series). despite some of the darker themes, the time of the book leans more funny/sarcastic-y. there were definitely moments in the book that could have stayed emotionally tense and driven, but that I felt were ruined by the humor a bit.
for some reason this is just a comfort read of mine lol

I found the main character very hard to like. She kept saying that she was an strong and independent, but all she does is whine throughout the whole book. Her family obviously cares for her and wants to protect her, but missy to-good-to-be-bothered just keeps whining about not having her freedom.
In short I couldn't sympathize with the main character and skipped through about three quarters of the book.

The plot being evil south Americans vs good Americans feels racist and I cringed everytime she unironically called her father "Daddy"

I did not enjoy the book and somewhat wished I had stopped reading it before I felt committed by halfway. The first half was mostly setting up the characters and the world. Faythe is impulsive and headstrong. The cliche love triangle was there but with a very clear outcome. What really angered me however
Spoiler
was that the entire plot and most of the second half of the book was entirely based off sexual assault and rape. The same plot could have been done with them kidnapping wives without the entire chapters of descriptive sexual assault. I do not appreciate rape being used a s throwaway plot device.kotokelly77's review against another edition

A friend suggested this series for me. She knows I like romance and paranormal books, this series had both. This series was slow in some places but overall enjoyable.
This series is about werecat shape shifters and their pride. Most Prides have toms but not many tabbies. Each Pride is lucky to have a tabby. The tabby is the Prides most treasured prizes. Tabbies are found to be attractive and fertile by members of the Pride and the Strays.
Strays are werecats that don't belong to a pride or whose who are human born.
Each Pride has enforcers. Enforcers can travel on 2 feet in human form or on 4 feet in werecat form.
Faythe is the only tabby in her Pride apart from her mother. She is wanted by many toms but her heart only wants one. She has many brothers and cousins but she will be Alpha one day if her father wants her to be.
Each book continues on from the last one.
I would recommend this series.

Finally got done reading it today...
Wasn't the worst thing I've read but it hasn't been the best either... Very hard for me to get into the book until the end... The end was nice :)
I don't know why I didn't like it... I tried so hard to like it but I just... Couldn't
And for some reason Marc pissed me off, and why'd Jace have to have his heart (and nose) broken?! Rude. I'm team Abby and Jace ;)

Dnf at 150 pages.
Its just not gripping me enough to keep reading. The 'mystery' element is practically non existent, and barely anything has happened. The plot is weak. On top of that, the misogyny is bothering me, and the fact the main character is interested in being with these other two guys when she already has a boyfriend, who has been thought of once in all this time. That irked me as well, how she was almost like cheating on Andrew, Faythe didn't care and I felt bad for him. So yeah, I have no desire to continue reading.
