IWC book club January’25. Novella, snappy pacing, lovely writing. For adult fans of Joan Bauer’s children’s books.

A quiet, tender novella. This is my second exposure to Claire Keegan and she really has a way of delivering a beautiful story with lovable characters in a short, concise package. Beautiful prose and written in a way that leaves things left unsaid and up to the reader’s interpretation. I enjoyed this story and felt empathy and love for the main character and the family that fostered her. I’m happy to have been introduced to Keegan’s work.

Another beautiful piece of work by Claire Keegan. Heartbreaking and inspiring that illustrates how affection and compassion can change the life of a child.

even as we’re seeing a better life for the narrator (even just for the summer), it’s melancholy seeing her make sense of her life at home and always flinching like something’s about to go wrong. Claire Keegan’s writing makes me want to read more from her
