A short novella written so beautifully, I’m ensured to be a reader of Claire Keegan’s other works.

There’s a simpleness to the narration that doesn’t detract from how quaint and vivid the Irish landscape is, while also showcasing the quiet stillness of the narrator. This also neither diminishes her sweet naïveté nor the slight melancholic nature of her existence with the Kinsellas, impressively showing just how Keegan is a master of her craft.

A truly beautiful, powerful story, and wonderfully well-written.

Something in me has been ripped out or pulled away. I want to pour over this book and pick apart the language and structure of it. Truly a well written novella.
5 stars is a feeling and this feeling is horribly empty and yet heartwarming all the same.
The last line broke me. I started sobbing uncontrollably and cried for half an hour after finishing the book. I still feel like crying thinking about it. But damnit Mr Kinsella is her dad now. Ambiguous endings normally upset me but this way I can live believing in my optimistic heart that she went to live with them and knew what love felt like. What a good dad was.

Claire Keegan’s writing is perfect. This book is short, because she wastes no time, not a sentence, on words that don’t contribute to the mood. This is a beautiful little story, very sad but so human.

Such a deeply moving story despite its short length. I would have loved to know more about what happened to the girl, but it ends suddenly.
