easy read with a simple enough plot (reminded me of The Belles) but it held itself with a kind of maturity. quite an enjoyable book

really fun! Major issue is it was more telling than inferring (too many obvious things) but still a joyful read

slow-paced
  • Strong character development? It's complicated

I liked the character development, but just when I started to enjoy the book it ended.

This is the most confusing book I have ever read. I hated every second of it.

I thoroughly enjoyed this debute book! I loved the dynamics between Matilde, Aesa, and Saye. Let alone the added chaos of Alec, Willian and Fen. I also really enjoyed the adult characters dramatic backstories as well. I am excited to see how the next book goes, especially with the character growth that went on throughout this book. The ending was my favorite type of cliff hanger ending.

I do agree with some of the complaints people had about the magic system and I'm hoping we get some inclusion of trans characters as well so it's not just the token "pride month book but we only mention Lesbians" kinda pride month because it's a "safer" representation.

This story was one of the more unique ones I have read in a long time. The magic system was well done and so different than anything I have ever read before. I throughly enjoyed this read and think it is the perfect starter YA fantasy

I have mixed feelings about this book. While I was intrigued by the characters and the outcome of the Nightbirds as they became entangled in a political game, there were moments where the story fell flat for me. At over 400 pages, it felt like the book could have been trimmed down, as some of the side storylines shifted focus away from the bonds forged between the Nightbirds and felt unnecessary. If you enjoy more of a folklore steeped in magic with a political plot this book is perfect for you.
