Super cool concept, just really confusing execution.

It’s weird to have a book where so many characters are accused of living in  a brothel that says so little about sex work! Ultimately I enjoyed this book - I think the character work was really well done. Plot wise it is pretty boiler-plate “they’re burning the witches, even if you’re not one “ feminism. That’s a thing I like so I’m not going to knock it, but I wish more had been done to make this story feel fresh.

I enjoyed the book and will probably read the next one. It just took me a while to get into and it moved kind of slow for me. It feels like there is a lot more Matilda than the other girls and I am not as interested in her story as the other girls. The only time I am really interested in Matilda's story is when she is around Alec. I want to see more Finn and Sayer. I want them to encourage more confidence and certainty in Aesa.

I wanted to love this book, but it was a difficult read for me. I set it down after 2 chapters to switch to a different book just to make sure I wasn't in some kind of a slump. I returned to it later and got through chapter 5, and it was still such a hard read. I could not connect with the book through reading like I usually do. So I last ditched efforted to the audiobook. It makes a huge difference. My problem I realize with this book was that there are way too many pov in a chapter and a lot of characters introduced within the book. Too many love interests to pin down. The audiobook made it smoother since the narrator uses different voices to distinguish who was talking and thinking so you didn't have to register whose pov you were in. It made sense after that. I do wish the pov were maybe put into separate chapters with their names in the chapter titles instead of just split within chapters.

It started to pick up pretty well in the middle of the book, but the villainy seemed too easily diffused, which left a lot to be desired. I do hope the next one picks up with a stronger story.

I would say this book is like a mix of Shadow and Bone with Revelle. I enjoyed that each of our main girlies had different personilities.

This book is brilliant. It sucked me back into reading after a 6 month block. The characters are fierce and each one their own personality. The magic system is awesome with magical kisses just being the beginning. I couldn't put the book down and finished it in two days. I can't wait for the next book!
