One of the best books in the VORKOSIGAN saga. A compelling mystery and a moving drama at once. We are introduced to the compelling and delightful character of Ekaterin and continue to explore Miles’ adaptation to his new life after the events of Memory. The story also explores the effects of imperial occupation and integration. As always, Bujold’s character work is the heart of the story, and you feel every wound that these characters carry in their minds and souls.

Re-read. For some reason, this was the only gap in my mainline Vorkosigan series, so I stole it from my Mom's bookshelf (where I'd probably left it on a previous trip). A solid Miles book.

Miles in love and courting. Ekaterin is overwhelmed with her own history and family worries; but still able to recognize and defeat the terrorists. Though in the end she describes him as "The man (who) could charm snakes from their holes, nine-year-olds from locked bathrooms, and Komarran terrorists from their bunkers." Miles description of his former lovers is vintage Miles. The reader is left waiting for the next book, with "He's not so short," said Ekaterin defensively. "He's just . . . concentrated." Also, love Mile's flashback/realization after their accidental dip in the pond. 4/1/11

Enjoyed Ekaterin so much had to read [b:A Civil Campaign|61899|A Civil Campaign (Vorkosigan Saga, #12)|Lois McMaster Bujold|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1386924032s/61899.jpg|1093445]; even though I had just reread it recently.

I had put off reading this book because I had been frustrated a bit by Miles in [b:Memory|10441|The Memory Keeper's Daughter|Kim Edwards|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1266450174s/10441.jpg|2868431]. But [b:Komarr|61884|Komarr (Vorkosigan Saga, #11)|Lois McMaster Bujold|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1170597725s/61884.jpg|1129294] brought back everything that I've enjoyed about this series, including a smart woman as a co-leading character. Cordelia initially drew me into this world and other than the occasional glimpse of Ellie's perspective, I have missed having a woman's point of view. Ekaterin's voice made for a great change of pace.

Great installment in this series. As always, Bujold expands the world and characters in her space opera, with Miles Vorkosigan (in his new role as Auditor) going to investigate a major accident. Unlike a number of the previous books, there is little action but a lot of mystery-solving, albeit in the Columbo way where you know a lot before he does. She gives a lot of life to Ekaterin (and her troubled marriage). Unlike some series, Bujold never gets in a rut and is always finding entirely new things to say.

A nice little science fiction thriller with some romance and marriage issues thrown in. I rather like Ekaterin, and I think her problems are a nice transition to the largely social next novel.

I enjoy listening to these on audio (despite the reader sometimes changing the pronunciation of names mid-story). This story alternates viewpoints between chapters, which worked really well to advance the story and the characters (and I love hearing others' takes on Miles!).
