Rogue Lawyer by John Grisham

This was a mean-spirited, vicious, and grossly biased diatribe against the evils of our justice system. No element was immune -- judges, prosecutors, police, penal institutions -- all were cast as totally corrupt. Only defense attorneys were shown more favorably, but only slightly so.

Along with the unfair attacking, it wasn't even a good book. It was mostly a collection of only loosely connected short stories all written from the first person perspective of Sebastian Rudd, the aptly named rogue lawyer. But long sections just seemed to be pointless filler narrative.

I've read all of Grisham's books to date and consider him to be one of my go-to authors, but this was easily the least enjoyable book of his to date. I always finish every book I read, but I really had to force myself to finish this one.

I liked this. A conglomeration of short stories, but centered around one character. I wondered if he wanted to organize it this way, or if these were ideas he had for future novels, and put them all in one.

Dreadful. Unpleasant plot, dated, sexist.

Always my go to author when I need an interesting, thought provoking fast read. This book lives up to my expectations.

Not a bad novel, though it feels more like a collection of interrelated short stories than a novel. Each story is pretty interesting, but the book feels a bit amateurish for Grisham and Rudd comes off as a particularly unlikable protagonist.

Quick paced story with little in the way of superfluous writing. Engaging characters and a solid storyline with no silly twists.

Disappointing after such classics as The Firm and The Pelican Brief.

Although I have no evidence, I fear that he might be being tempted to go down the collaboration/ghost writer route in order to keep turning out books under his name, like some other big thriller writers. That would be a terrible mistake and I hope he manages to avoid it. Better to have a good book every few years than mediocre every year just to fill publisher's demands.

I normally love all of John Grisham's books. This one did not grab me into the story line the way the others have. I also wasn't crazy about the storyline either. He has written much better books and I hope his next one will be better than this.

I enjoyed this. It was like several short stories so you don't have to wait 300 pages to figure it out.
