A love story/adventure combo. I thought the first half of the book was long. The second half picked up and I enjoyed it much more. Following Martas life after being held captive in a Nazi prison. This sequel to The Kommadants Girl was extraordinary.

This book held me engaged right up until the last couple chapters, where suddenly it became a conspiracy theory. I expected the romance to resolve implausibly (romances tend to do that), but the author made the romance dependent upon the mystery -- which is clearly not the point of the book and clearly not Jenoff's forte.

The odd part is that there were no red flags through the majority of the book that the writing would deteriorate so rapidly towards the end. As a result, the climactic moments are a complete let-down. First the female narrative becomes shallow and ludicrous with no emotional nuance (he's dead! how sad! he's not dead! how shocking!) and then the romantic obstacles are unraveled through inexplicable revelations that come completely out of left field.

The conclusion of this book reminded me of the (deliberately ridiculous) conclusion to the movie "Down With Love," except without the irony. Unfortunately humor doesn't seem to be Jenoff's forte, either.

Enjoyable read. Plot was kind of silly but fun. Would prefer more focus on history than romance, but still a good read.

Beautifully written, and exceptionally researched! A wonderful story that had me on the edge of my seat! And, 3 plot twists I never saw coming!

A pleasant surprise. I wasn't sure what to expect, but this was an enthralling read. I couldn't put it down and read it in a couple of hours. The writing is straight-forward and beautifully simplistic. I'm not a big fan of first-person narrative, but it worked here, although the present tense was a bit awkward. Marta and Paul aren't fully developed characters, but still garnered my interest and sympathy. I cared about what happened to them, and anxiously turned each page.

I found the historical aspect fascinating, especially from the European viewpoint as the eastern bloc fell to communism. This is a sequel to The Kommandant's Girl, which I haven't read yet. However, it stands alone well. Easily recommended.

I enjoyed the unexpected twists of this book, but wish I had started with the first book of the series. So many of the twists of the first book were repeated during the telling of this story, that I don't think there would be any surprises left to discover.
Overall, it was an interesting read. I only gave it 3 out of five because of the predictable spy scenes and the sexual content.

I am not sure why, but I have read this book several times and the heartbreak, pain and finally happiness makes your heart ache, but brings joy to me to read.

I randomly picked up this book at the library after reading the back cover. I was very surprised at how immediately I became obsessed with finding out what was going to happen next. I wish I would have read the the first novel in the series (I didn't realize this was a sequel) but it is not necessary to read it to understand the story. The ending really kept me guessing and I love that everything wasn't 100% predictable.
