As a Cypriot born in 1969, lived through the coop and the Turkish invasion, I feel that Victoria managed to approach the reality of that times! We look back to all these mistakes and hope that no one will have to live the same horror again! It's time to unite the island and also all around the world to have peace! Force your governments people to achieve peace and stop all wars!

The Sunrise is set in Cyprus in the 1970s, when unrest within the Greek and Turkish Cypriot communities led to deposition of the Cypriot President and thence to invasion by Turkey and the island being divided in two. The families in the book are fictional, but illustrate very well how friends and families were devastated by the consequences of these events. The overused trope of dislike actually being hidden desire between Aphroditi and Markos was irritatingly obvious from the start, but as the story unfolded, this became irrelevant. Overall, the book was well written and captivating.

I learnt some history that I ought to have known about the division of Cyprus. The time of the two families locked into the posh hotel particularly resonates during our own lockdown (we don’t have an army outside thankfully). The mix of flawed characters and the lack of a happy ending was refreshing.

The historical info was really good, but I just didn’t connect with the main characters...

Very gripping read, I love how Victoria writes! The story has got me wanting to research the Turkish invasion, thats how interesting it was!

The first section was a bit slow, and I couldn't get invested in any of the characters. I could have done without most of the Savvas/Aphroditi/Markos storylines in exchange for a deeper dive into the historical context of Cyprus. The description of the historical events, up to and including the Turkish invasion, is well written but then the aftermath is largely untouched. I was also disappointed with how shallow the characters were. There were so many perspectives that it didn't feel like any of them were able to be fully explored.

This book was good but it dragged in some parts. It probably could have been about 75 pages shorter without losing the plotlines.

I didn't enjoy this as much as The Island or The Return. I learned a lot about the period of Cyprus's history but the story took a long time to get going and many of the characters were difficult to warm to.

Disappointing compared to previous books. Lacking the depth of characters & storylines I'm used to from VH. Felt like it could have been one strand of a great book rather than the entirety of an ok one
