I really enjoyed 'The Island' by this author, but it seems that was the only book of hers that was really outstanding. All her other books were mediocre and/or tiring, and this one was no different.
As much as I dislike history books, I do enjoy reading historical fiction. The tragic story of Cyprus itself was interesting, and the author did a fairly good job describing what caused the troubles and what the Greek and Turkish Cypriots had to endure. I guess my problem was more with the central characters in the book. There were a few too many of them to keep track of, and none of them were not particularly well developed. It was difficult to feel any sort of connection with most of them, although a few of the more minor characters became my favorite (such as Huseyin), and I enjoyed the friendships that grew. For the most part, I thought the ending of the book was satisfactory, although there were quite a few loose ends, which I never enjoy (I like everything wrapped up nice and neat and all questions answered, thank you very much).
Overall, this wasn't a horrible book, but I can't say it was good enough that I'll be recommending it to friends.

Another well written book that taught me something about history. I only wish we knew what happened to Ari and that Aphroditi had a happier ending

This was great holiday reading, good escapism with a captivating story, set is a time and place I knew little about. I enjoyed learning about this time and found it thought provoking to think of the situation and fear that people lived with, but found the relationships hopeful between the different groups.
I thoroughly recommend this book.
