This one got weird, huh. I'm not quite sure I get it, or even that there's much to get, but it was a fun read

All about identity, this little page turner is filled with overlapping narratives and literary devices. 'Think League of Gentleman' scripted by Italio Calvino...

A pretty solid book of slightly experiemental narratives in the meta vein. The cover tells me it's a novel in nine episodes, but I'm not sure I see that; the stories cross over, it's true, but I'm not sure they even really follow a particular theme, let alone develop it in a consistent or probing way.

The theme is maybe fame, as the title would suggest, or more openly identity-- who we are and how we know that, what it means. But as I suggested, it's not consistently developed beyond some observations, like identity now is maintained electronically and is therefore more virtual than ever.

Everything I've said sounds really negative, though, and that's not really how I felt about the book; after all, not every book needs to be a philosophical treatise. The stories here are lively and fun; Kehlmann's characters get out and have some interesting adventures, and he writes in a variety of styles and picks up on some of my favorite themes: what makes writers any good, and how does that make them bad at other things, for example, or maybe how fatuous most writing that purports to know anything really is. There's a lot here to like, with only a couple duds in the book. It's a quick read, it's not deep, but it's worth it.
