3.5 rounded up to 4.
The ideas, and mix of fantastical elements are all here, but alot of things were either a bit cliche or not delved into enough. The reading itself was easy but I felt like it fell short in areas where it could have shined.

Will be reading the next one, and I hope it's a bit better, because the premise here is awesome.

What's better in a blizzard than to be transported to another world? The descriptions in this book were so vivid I felt like I could see it taking place. I loved the way the authors spin traditional characters like Oberon and Puck into contemporary characterizations.

An interesting fantasy adventure. I liked the nods to history and mythology, though I did find how the author remarked on New York City streets and landmarks a lot a little annoying after a while. That might be thrilling for someone who knew the streets and landmarks better, but for a small town girl from Texas it just got a little distracting and repetitive from the overall story. Also the ending was a little abrupt; it felt like this big deal was made about training her to face the villain, but she didn't really use that much of her training in the end as there wasn't really a big showdown. It all happened a little too quickly. Otherwise, I liked the story and the mythological characters that cropped up throughout.

The first couple of chapters felt sort of clunky to me, filled with some fairly awkward exposition, but the pace and style smoothed out and drew me in. The characters are interesting and engaging and the plot races along. There were times that I wished the book were longer, to give more time to Garet's exploration of the city and to allow relationships to develop. Perhaps because of this, shifts in certain characters occasionally felt too abrupt, so that it was hard to believe that a character at the end of the book was the same one we had met at that beginning. But overall I quite liked it and might be tempted to pick up the sequel.

I was really disappointed in the book. I didn’t even finish. Got almost to the end and then had no desire to keep going. I felt like it was all superficial. The love story was not needed and I’ve read better for this type of story and even about John Dee.

I have given this a fair chance and cannot read anymore of it. Garet was devoid of any personality at all. I was 69% into this when I quit and had learnt fuck all about her. Will was a crappy love interest too. Why does she like him? she had spoken to him once before asking him to turn her into a vamp (which he didn't) then three times before randomly having sex with him. WHY??
The story could have been good, I like the watchmen idea and John Dee seems like he could be a decent bad guy but between meetibgs with different faery folk that seem to go on and on and crap sex with a vamp who only seems interested coz Garet is a decendant and spitting image of a woman he once loved it kinda lost its way.

A fun way to see New York. Had a vibe similar to some of favorite young adult reads. Some fun ideas.

Good concept bad ending. Good female lead character though. The book just didn’t have a lot of substance.
