2.5 Did anyone else feel like the author was pounding you over the head with the fact that he knew the streets and highways near Boulder?... I can't remember reading a book where the intersections and the streets and locations of buildings are constantly pointed out for no reason. The story was fine -

I kept expecting a twist, which never happened, because it played out exactly like you thought it would...jaxxmcqueen's review against another edition

So so. Not really inclined to write a review...it was that memorable.

I would really give this a 3.5-star rating. It's a very solid mystery, nothing annoying about it at all. But I just didn't love it enough for more stars. I'm on to #2 in the series now.
I found the thoughts and actions of the main character interesting, as he's a therapist, and that profession is interesting to me. None of the characters is super charming, but they're okay, and the unraveling mystery was interesting enough to keep me turning pages.
LATER: I just read book #2 and am liking the characters more. So maybe this series just has to grow on readers like me.

2 Stars Because it was his first book. Otherwise this would've easily been a 1 star. It took me a week to drudge through this book. It was beyond boring. About 1/2 way through it got interesting and I was happy I stayed with it. But then it just got silly. The only character I liked was Alan but man was he dull! It was a jumbled sleeper for sure. I would not recommend to anyone. I think the writer has potential and I hope he gets better acquainted with writing techniques. We need to care about the characters. We need more substance and less descriptions of meals and scenery. Half the time I felt like he was just trying to fill pages with obscure words and adjectives.

Great that the author's real life occupation is also a psychologist. Loved how the characters developed and ready to read more. Seemed to overuse words that made me get out the dictionary so that made the pacing a little jumpy in addition to his own pacing oddities

I'd read a couple of Alan Gregory mysteries before and thought they were pretty good, so i decided to begin with the beginning. This is book number one. I have to say, if i had started with the first one, i never would have read any more in the series. Alan is a psychologist, so the books are sort of like the Jonathan Kellerman series, but not. Not as good, for sure. Every character in this book is annoying. The two most annoying characters are the main guy, Alan, and the woman he's trying to date, Lauren. She is a b*tch and he is a total glutton for punishment for keeping coming back after everything that she gives him. This book elapses over a year, but i never feel for the people in it, even on the sad moments, it's oh whatever. They all come across as pretentious, and Alan as weak and annoying. The mystery itself was so obvious that i finished the book to see the twist ending..there's not really any twist. It's just obvious. It took me forever to read this book..i usually read one in a day or two, this one took half a month. i read others in between but i was pretty consistently picking it up, getting bored and putting it down, unlike sometimes when i start a book, forget about it, and then finish it in a day or two once i finally get into it. i never got into it. The overall series is good at best, but this book is poor, i would recommend just skipping it and diving in later on, you'll figure things out as they recap a lot. you're not missing anything, i give it two stars because i was able to finish it.

A pretty good psychological thriller. Going to continue reading the series.
