I read this because I had run out of Cat Sebastian books, so I might have gone into it with unreasonably high expectations, since she's one of my favourite authors. The Gentleman's Book of Vices was a fun story but it could have been a bit better. I had a good time but didn't give me the deep understanding of the characters and that prevented me from being fully invested in their romance. One thing I liked was the side characters - they were strong for the time they spent on-page and did a lot towards making the story feel more populated. Romances, even those by experienced authors, can fall into the trap of shallow and boring side characters, so that was a pleasant surprise.

I read this book as an ARC through Netgalley, and enjoyed it so much. It checks all of my favorite romance novel boxes: historical fiction, LGBTQ+ characters (including great side characters), and a journey to HEA that feels earned. It's funny, but not sickly sweet. I was hooked right away, and the story was worth it from start to finish. I'm so looking forward to more from this author and would highly recommend this book!

I absolutely loved this book. From the start I was hooked by the character descriptions. As the book went on the sexual tension was done so well that any little contact between the two characters had you on the edge of your seat.
I was very impressed by how the author portrays the intimacy and connection, this allows us as the reader not only to care and root for the couple but it also allows for exploration in their sexual acts as there is trust and communication in place. It is a fantastic portrayal of a healthy relationship.
I really enjoyed how the author chose to do dual POVs it wasn’t repetitive and allowed for us to get closed to the characters and see the moments of vulnerability they share together.
My favourite part of this book is towards the end when they are daring to hope they can have a life together against all odds. When they realise that when you have someone in your life that loves you that everything is more enjoyable. The author has how the even the simplest of tasks in a life with someone you love can become wonderful treasured moments.
This book was an emotional journey and I loved every second of it, I’m looking forward to book 2.

for once the 3rd act break up felt realistic and necessary but otherwise the book felt more like someone telling you about it. you don’t actually get to see much of miles’s and charlie’s relationship so it felt like things moved too fast. also the audiobook narrator’s character voices were so annoying

I really loved this book! I enjoyed the historical setting and learning more about how queer books and "smut" were written, sold, and collected. I also liked the depiction of the Curious Fox - Charlie's queer club - it felt more like a found family situation and a safe place to meet others, and I liked how the staff and regulars looked out for Charlie. The main characters are great! Charlie is a bright, seemingly irrepressible fop who loves to read smut, go out to his club, and gossip with friends. Yet underneath his shining veneer is a heart beset by loneliness and a desperate longing to escape the upcoming marriage forced upon him by his family. Miles is a stark contrast - a grim loner with a tragic history of love and loss, determined to carve out a safe existence at the expense of his own happiness. Together, Charlie and Miles are an odd couple yet one that matches up in every way. I really enjoyed their story and all the sweet, romantic highs and the heart-wrenching lows. The supporting characters are so good and I loved how they all worked together to save the day. Overall, a very entertaining read full of feels!

Well this was fantastic and I've already started the sequel that I thankfully have an arc for. I was so invested and the third act conflict almost had me in tears and the queer found family?! YES PLEASE. Okay, now for an attempt at a coherent review...
Charlie is a carefree hedonist who goes to get a signature from his favorite smut writer before he's forced to marry. Only problem is that his favorite smut writer, Miles, is very paranoid and thinks he's there to blackmail him...and he's also very hot.Things don't end well but Miles shows up at Charlie's house the next day with the autographed book. Only problem is that Charlie's betrothed and her mother are there and they think he's the wine sommelier! And for some reason he's a damn good wine sommelier?! And still hot. So they get together, despite Miles' misgivings (his previous partner died in jail after being arrested for being gay) and Charlie's engaged status. Of course, Charlie doesn't end up getting married but it gets VERY CLOSE. I honestly think Alma (his jilting "bride") deserves her own book because I think she might be bi. We'll see. But anyways, I'm in love and I hope there are many many many books in this series because I also need one for all of Charlie's colorful friends from the molly house.

I really liked this historical MM romance! I'm a bit confused by some of the criticism from other readers. I loved the found family characters - the friends at the molly house, the publisher, and Charlie's prospective bride. I actually thought Charlie's choices were mature and thoughtful given the circumstances (don't want to give anything away). I really appreciated that Alma's situation was taken seriously. Victorian society kept A LOT of people down - women as well as LGBTQ people - and it's important that that was addressed in this book. I look forward to reading more of Jess Everlee!
