Time to give my thoughts on not only this final book in the series, but the Green Bone saga as a whole.
With the context of having finished the series, it’s interesting to look back on everything that’s happened and conclude that this a series where the characters are constantly locked in a cycle of fucking around & finding out. Again and again, they make decisions that seem practical (sometimes even ideal) in the moment, but the ramifications almost always come back later to bite them in the ass and further drive ongoing conflicts. This ties in with some of the sagas pervasive themes, such as being forced to take responsibility for your actions and reckon with the ramifications that follow, especially in positions of leadership.
This final book in the series was undoubtedly my favorite. The writing was extremely well done and the world felt so alive and real that I’m not fully convinced it doesn’t exist out there somewhere. There are still some sections that lean hard into exposition, but by this point I was used to it and less fazed. The ending sat weird with me for a bit after completion, but when I thought harder about the saga’s themes and what the characters were striving for in the future after the final pages, I realized that any other ending wouldn’t have carried out those messages as well as the one we got.
The series as a whole was fantastic, but not perfect. And that’s a good summarization of the leading Kaul family as well. Not perfect people, but they try their best and are constantly learning, growing, and striving for better for those that follow them.
In the end, I can confidently recommend this series to anyone looking to be fully engaged in a work of fiction. The first book is still, in my opinion, the weakest entry (though not at all a bad book), and every following entry grows stronger. Really enjoyed this one!

A great ending to the saga, I really enjoyed following all the characters and watching them grow and develop. Andy and Shae are real ones. The ending felt very neat and appropriate, especially as it ended in the same place the story began. Amazing book series overall and one of my favourite urban fantasies.

Wow, I’m literally crying, this book was so incredible and such a poignant end for these characters. Lee is truly a master.
If you want your heart ripped out, stepped on, and then unceremoniously shoved back into your chest, this trilogy is for you.

Where to begin…. This series was a SLOW burn. Hilo, Wen, Shae, Niko, and Anden are so precious to me. The ending had me in tears of sadness and joy (simultaneously) the constant struggle back and forth between the mountain and no peak was my favorite part of the story. I appreciated the expansion of jade and complexity of the overall political makeup of their world but the clan tension was the bread and butter of this story. It had the most impact on me. Ayt Mada is such a good villain/adversary. She and Shaes meetings are so well written. I feel bitter sweet about finishing this up. Such a poetic ending with the family at the twice lucky🥹I really enjoyed this final book. Kaul Hilo, may the gods recognize him.

This one was the best of the bunch. So much inter generational stuff. But tbh I’m so glad to be done with this saga. Well written, cool world, but so much angst I had trouble wanting to read the whole time.

Jade Legacy spans over decades focusing on the Kaul family as they battle enemies across all angles. It’s up close and ugly and messy. The dynamics between the characters are a highlight, because they shift and change. The politics are layered as Kekon navigates its position against foreign interference and Ayt Mada. Its loss, death, retribution, family, love, and honor bound into one.
I didn’t realize how much this family and characters like Hilo grew on me until this book. The development and growth we see is staggering, but in the end they’re flawed in a way that’s feels tangible. These characters leap off the page. This book I really enjoyed Wen and Hilo AND RUU!! my baby fought his duel and no one saw him win 😭😭 this part broke
The call backs and references, how it all ties the entire Green Bone Saga is a testament to how detailed Fonda Lee is as a writer. I appreciate how she wrote the war against the Mountain clan…long and dragged out but in the end one cannot truly finish the other.
By the end, i was crying my eyes out because Hilo really did put his family first, unwaveringly. His last conversation with Shae had me 😭😭😭 also, Lan will always haunt the narrative, miss him bad, but the entire family will see each other again. family trope done well
The time jumps were a lot this book, but I felt like the plotting was really good, so I didn’t mind.
Overall, the Green Bone Saga is one of those series that you just have to treat as one entity. Finishing it, makes me want to go back reread with a new perspective. I think it would be one of my favorite shows if it was adapted to that medium, across many seasons to cover the time jumps. I think the writing style and magic system would work really well there.
