Everyone should read a book like this. A true account of German occupation of Poland through the eyes of a jewish pianist.The sole survivor from his whole family he battles for live in years of nazi hatred ironically ro be saved by a german officer. Fantastic book and would highly recommend to anyone who likes to read true stories.

I saw the movie first, which made me think of some of the images when reading this book, particularly the scene where the family are getting onto the truck. I'm glad there was a bit more background regarding the German officer, Wilm Hosenfeld. Despite it not being written in a particularly emotional way, it certainly provoked an emotional response. Very powerful.

Birkaç yıl önce Primo Levi'nin, Boğulanlar Kurtulanlar eserini okuduğumdan beri 2. Dünya Savaşı hakkında yazılan kurgusal eserleri okumaktan çoğunlukla uzak durdum çünkü hiçbir kurgusal kitap gerçeğin yakınından bile geçmeyi başaramıyordu. Roman Polanski'nin, Piyanist filmini duymayan kalmamıştır. Yayınevine bana kitabı okuma fırsatı sunduğu için teşekkür ederim, Piyanist benim en sevdiğim filmler arasındadır ve bu yüzden kitabını okumak farklı bir deneyim oldu. En başta belirtmem gerekir ki Szpilman bir sanatçıydı ama edebiyatçı değildi, onun hayatı tamamıyla müzik etrafında dönüyordu. Kitaba bu yüzden edebi kaygıyla bakmak yanlış olacaktır. Bir diğer kısım ise bu kitabın 2. Dünya Savaşı hakkında yazılmış çoğu kitabının aksine sıcağı sıcağına savaştan hemen sonra yazılmış olmasıdır. Anne Frank'in Günlüğü okurlarda nasıl bir etki oluşturuyorsa Piyanist de aynı etkiye sahip. Kitabı okurken film uyarlamasının ne kadar iyi olduğunu tekrar fark ettim. Öğrendim ki yıllar önce okuyup çok sevdiğim Çocuk Kral kitabının yazarı Janusz Korczak çok sevdiği ve yanlarından hiçbir zaman ayrılmadığı kimsesiz çocuklarla, gaz odasında hayatını kaybetmiş. Ve tekrar anladım ki savaşlar bum bum, güm güm değilmiş; savaşlar Szpilman'ın yaşadıklarını yaşayan ve sefalete sürüklenen insanların toplamıymış. Birazcık yardım birçok insanın hayatını değiştirebilirmiş. Yer yer gördüklerini anlatırken insanın kanının donmaması çok zor. Wladyslaw'ın ve yüzbinlercesinin yaşadıklarını okumak insanı fazlasıyla etkiliyor. Bu kitapta Szpilman'ın yazdıklarına ek olarak hayatını kurtarmada büyük bir rol oynamış olan Nazi askeri Hosenfeld'in günlüğüne ve güzel bir son söze yer verilmiş. Okuduğuma memnun olduğum bir kitap oldu ve hem bu kitabın okunmasının hem de filminin izlenmesinin önemli olduğuna inanıyorum.

Honestly it was a little difficult for me to understand here and there, especially near the ending but the story is very powerful and paints a vivid scene of what war was like and the treatment of Jews at this time.

So much better than the movie, Szpilman's account of survival is harrowing in an unadorned fashion that seems almost detached, and is all the more horrible for it. Polanski's film version is pretty faithful to the text, perhaps with the exception of some of the chronology, so what I found most enlightening was how Szpilman filled in his days between the major events illustrated by the film. Taking care of your sanity in a most insane time under strict isolation seems almost impossible, and there are moments in Szpilman's narration that make you genuinely believe in divine intervention. There seems no other way to explain how this man survived six years of random, and exhaustive, persecution that reduced a population of 3.3 million to about 300,000. The odds were stacked monumentally against him, especially as an intellectual. I expected to see the influence of music a lot more in the man's personal account, and other than explanations of events he played and acquaintances found very little.

The strength of this Holocaust memoir is in it's ability to fill in the blanks. Most accounts of a popular nature, such as Wiesel's Night focus on life in the concentration camps, but Szpilman's account shows just how horrible life was outside of those nightmares. He also adds an element of confusion and chaos to the image of the precise, methodical and mechanical Nazi killing regime by painting a more diverse and random picture of the characters involved in it's prosecution. Among the evil are not just Aryan SS men, but Ukrainians and Poles, and among the saviors are not just noble Poles but Wehrmacht officers.

The most touching, and sad portion of the book seemed to be the diary of Wilm Hosenfeld, carefully edited and selected to illustrate another perspective of the events narrated by Szpilman. Hosenfeld's story is one of true tragedy as well and adds to the pathos of the tale.

A must read for humanity in general and scholars specifically.

wow...this is going to be a short review because to me...this is an AMAZING story of survival and no words can express what Szpilman went through. But what I loved/cringed at the same time was was that he explained in GREAT DETAIL what it was like in the Polish Ghetto. even after which I had no idea and it was horrifying. but I'd highly recommend this book to anyone. it's in my top 3 favorite WWII bks next to Schindeler's List. still haven't found #3 yet. but I"m sure I will soon. but this book...just incredible.
