This picture book creates a historical fiction book based on real occurrences. During WWI groups of women and even school boys and girls joined into big "contests" to knit warm hats, mittens, and socks for the U.S. troops fighting in Europe. This book had a real opportunity to bring a story to life about a time in U.S. history that has been largely left out of the canon of children's literature; however, I felt like there wasn't enough "meat" to the story, or notes before or after the story, to accomplish much in this area. I was a little disappointed. I think I'm giving three stars mainly because it DOES address a topic that I haven't found much on in kid's lit.

Brings a whole new meaning to sox for a generation at war. To all those who did their part ... knit, purl, and more.

This charming little picture book forges lots of new ground. Knitting book about a little boy? Check. Introduction to the history of life during war? Check. Entertaining but educational narrative? Check. Charming illustrations? Check. If you knit or are a history buff, grab this book and the nearest 6-9 year old you can find and read it together.

American boys and girls compete to knit things to keep soldiers warm in WWI. Fun cartoony illustrations & great source material. Hornbook & Booklist gave starred reviews.

Based on the true events of World War I. On July 30, 1918, the Navy League Comforts Committee sponsored a three-day "Knit-In" at Central Park in New York City. This event raised over $4000 and over the course of three days, volunteers knitted 50 sweaters, 48 mufflers, and 224 pairs of socks.
