Knit Your Bit: A World War I Story by Deborah Hopkinson

3.0

This picture book creates a historical fiction book based on real occurrences. During WWI groups of women and even school boys and girls joined into big "contests" to knit warm hats, mittens, and socks for the U.S. troops fighting in Europe. This book had a real opportunity to bring a story to life about a time in U.S. history that has been largely left out of the canon of children's literature; however, I felt like there wasn't enough "meat" to the story, or notes before or after the story, to accomplish much in this area. I was a little disappointed. I think I'm giving three stars mainly because it DOES address a topic that I haven't found much on in kid's lit.
