Ok so... incoming rant about how one unnecessary line ruined this book.
I don't even know where to start. Was this book good? No, not really. Did I enjoy it? Yeah, maybe, but honestly I don't know how to feel. Let's start with the good and move on to the bad parts of this fine piece of literature.

I liked Merinus' personality when she wasn't in the "frenzy" like she was actually quite likable and funny.
"Do you know I'm a virgin? Seriously, virgins shouldn't be this turned on. It has to be bad for their health or something. We're an endangered species, ya know?"
As for Callan- go off king give us nothing, idk for some reason he irks me. I liked him but he just wasn't anything special. So Callan has part lion's DNA and his last name is Lyons- straight to jail.
I feel kinda bad for Merinus and Callan because for the rest of their lives they will always be horny. And the only exceptions are when they finish having sex and when she's pregnant (and even then it will just lessen).

I realize that this is erotica and maybe we don't have time for female friendships with all the sex going on but I thought Sherra would at least be an ally of sorts for Merinus. So why the fuck was this part added to the book?

Basically, they had to take samples from Merinus and test her because this is the first time they can document the "mating frenzy". But mind you Merinus was drunk when this happened. I mean that has to be some kind of assault, right?
This wasn't the first time they did tests on Merinus and she got uncomfortable. Sherra herself has been tested against her will before, and she goes ahead and does this to Merinus. Again, what the fuck.
So you must think that it was absolutely necessary for Sherra to swab Merinus without her permission- and that's where you're WRONG.
IT WAS NEVER MENTIONED AGAIN!!!
This was the second or third time they swabbed her vag so they already had her sample. If I wanted to read Sherra's book this would make me hate her, anything good about Sherra's character was ruined by that one line.
I was actually so shocked that Sherra took that sample from Merinus after she pretty much said "get tf away from me", part of me only wanted to keep reading if it was ever mentioned again.
I forgot to mention that not only was Merinus drunk during that scene but she was just chillin' in the living room, so they weren't even in the lab, and Sherra went out of her way to go to the lab to go get the swabbing thingy. (And that was after she acknowledged that Marinus was in fact drunk.)

How the character's so freely talked about Merinus being in heat or her and Callan having to mate, in front of the family made me so uncomfortable. Maybe it's easier for Callan and his siblings because they all have part animal DNA but when Sherra said that Callan had to "reassert his claim" on Merinus in front of her father and brothers, I fucking gagged.

The smut scenes were really good, if you complain about the language used in this book or how many times they had sex, what did you expect? It's literally about Callan and Merinus going nuts and having to mate all the fucking time or they start to die. The amount of times Merinus' "womb contracted"... jesus... I'm surprised she survived.
I liked that Merinus didn't easily submit to Callan even though she couldn't control her body.

Well, the smexy parts are great, but the story is a little angsty for my taste. The couple is doing the no yes no yes no yes no yes....type of fighting that I find tedious. Still, I have often found the first book in a series is often the weakest. Kane and Sherra sound like they have an interesting story so I may continue the series.

Callan Lyons, a human-lion hybrid, is on the run from the powerful Genetics Council behind his creation, which now seeks to destroy him. Merinus Tyler is a journalist set on proving herself to her overprotective family by exposing the council and bringing Callan to safety. These two fiercely independent people clash in an extreme battle of wills compounded by a brutal chemistry that binds them together in a “mating frenzy”.
A relatively realistic and intriguing premise of humans genetically engineered with animal DNA. It would have been interesting to have more details about the scientific processes involved and the people behind the project. As this is the first book in the series, these details may still be forthcoming.
Merinus is an intelligent, confident and stubborn heroine who refuses to give in to Callan’s dominance, which can be overbearing at times. They have steamy physical chemistry but I was disappointed in the lack of an emotional connection. The secondary characters are also compelling, especially Kane (Merinus’s domineering older brother) and Sherra, whose story I look forward to reading.
Overall, I would have preferred more plot development and characterization. The sex scenes become a little excessive. That said, the book is worth reading if only as exposition for the later books in the series.
Note: the cover art of the book is very appealing and what drew me to the book in the first place.

Eine Kampfmaschine sollte er werden und das versuchte man ihm durch körperliche und seelische Folter zu vermitteln. Doch er konnte mit Hilfe eines Arztes fliehen und befreite noch weitere Breeds. Merinus, eine Journalistin, ist die einzige Frau in ihrer Familie (7 Brüder und ihr Vater) und sie versucht Callan dazu zu überreden an die Öffentlichkeit zu gehen und aufzudecken, was da in den Laboren vor sich geht. Aber Callan will sein Rudel beschützen und weiter in seinem Versteck leben. Da braucht Marinus einiges an Überredungskunst.
*Wie kam das Buch zu mir*
Ich liebe ja Bücher, die nur so vor Testosteron strotzen und ich hatte schon einiges über dieses Buch gehört. Daher musste es einfach von mir gelesen werden. Der LYX Verlag hat es mir dann netter Weise zur Rezension zur Verfügung gestellt.
*Aufmachung/Qualität*
Das Buchcover ist recht stabil und die Bindung trotzdem flexibel. Bei normalem Lesen entstehen daher keine Leserillen und das Buch liegt sehr leicht in der Hand. Die Gestaltung des Covers ist sehr ansprechend. Auch die Innenseite ist illustriert. Die Kapitel sind recht kurz, so dass man jederzeit ein Ende finde kann und gut abschätzen kann wie weit man noch lesen will. Jedes Kapitel ist am Anfang mit Ranken versehen. Als Bonus enthält das Buch noch ein Leseprobe von Shannon McKenna „Sünden der Vergangenheit“.
*Meinung:*
Ich habe lange überlegt, ob ich dem Buch die Tendenz zu 5 Sternen oder 4 geben soll. Es gab einige Ungereimtheiten und nicht nachvollziehbare Stimmungsänderungen der Charaktere, die eigentlich für die Tendenz zu 4 Sternen sprechen würden. Schlussendlich sind es doch 4,6 also Tendenz zu 5 Sternen geworden, weil es einfach ein grandioser Auftakt zu einer Reihe ist, die in den größten Teilen meinem Leseinteresse entspricht und neben sehr heißer Erotik auch eine gut durchdachte Handlung und Spannung enthält. Diese Mischung findet man nur selten so ausgewogen.
Hauptaugenmerk liegt eindeutig auf dem erotischen Aspekt. Hier geht es nicht um Blümchensex sondern dominanten Sex, der für manche schon grenzwertig sein könnte. Trotzdem wirkte die Entwicklung der Beziehung zwischen Callan und Merinus glaubwürdig auf mich. Das Tier in Callan will seine Gefährtin unterwerfen. Merinus ist aber kein kleines verschüchtertes Mädchen. Sie ist mit 7 Brüdern aufgewachsen und weiß sich durchzusetzen. Das sorgt für Reibung, aber schlussendlich ist trotzdem klar wer hier wen dominiert. Wer also mit Sexszenen dieser Art nichts anfangen kann, sollte die Finger von dem Buch lassen. Alle anderen sollten unbedingt zugreifen, denn die Erotikszenen sind sehr gut geschrieben! Etwas gewöhnungsbedürftig ist eine anatomische Besonderheit von Callan, aber das lest bitte selbst.
Der Schreibstil ist einfach und lässt sich super schnell lesen. Man kann gut in die Geschichte abtauchen und fiebert mit dem Protagonisten mit. Allerdings ist die Sprachwahl stellenweise vulgär und könnte daher abschrecken.
Was mir besonders gefiel, war der Spannungsbogen. Oft wird der bei Romanen dieser Art vernachlässigt. Hier wollte man das Buch aber einfach nicht zur Seite legen, um sowohl die Entwicklung von Callan und Merinus, als auch die Hintergrundgeschichte, um die Aufdeckung der ganzen Laborgeschichte, weiter zu verfolgen. Die Geschichte ist an sich schon recht abgeschlossen, aber enthält einige Teaser auf die folgenden Bände. Die Spannung wie es weiter geht, besteht also auch noch nach dem Lesen und ich werde den zweiten Band auf jeden Fall lesen sobald er herauskommt.
Die Liebesgeschichte ist nicht sehr romantisch, aber sehr sexy wenn man solche dominanten Spielchen mag. Trotzdem entwickelt sich die Beziehung der beiden im Laufe des Buches recht glaubwürdig. Einige Reaktionen sind zwar nicht wirklich nachvollziehbar und die Stimmung der beiden schwankt manchmal recht stark, aber im großen und ganzen nimmt man den beiden ab, dass sie mehr als nur sexuelle Anziehungskraft für einander empfinden.
Die Hintergrundgeschichte um die geheimen Labore und deren Ziele, fand ich sehr interessant und auch die Umsetzung der tierischen Natur der Breeds konnte mich überzeugen. Callan hat mehr als nur eine nichtmenschliche Besonderheit und ich wette, dass in den Folgebänden noch mehr interessante Breeds ins Spiel kommen.

To begin with, I give fair warning that there are Alpha male behaviors and some questionable consent situations. There are many sex scenes, rough and a little vulgar. But enjoyable all the same. The plotline genetic experimentation and consequents. If you do not focus on the sex, the reader can see and experience the pain and joy of Marinus and Callan falling in love. The fear of the Council and wonder who the counsel may be. Private sector or government. Maybe a little of both.
I will be honest and say that there were maybe one too many sex scenes. But it is a better-balanced book than some of L.L.'s other books.

Loved it
I loved this book and the characters. There was so much heat, steam, a little fluff and romance. With action to give this book a good plot. Definitely going to get the next one.
