the pride and joy of Sheffield once posited ‘…don’t believe the hype’ and for most of my life i’ve done well to live by that credo. until today. i caved in. and im glad i did. out of the lot ‘the green ribbon’ was my favorite. never will i look at a woman with a green ribbon around her neck the same way ever again. if patience is a virtue then my boy alfred deserves to be canonized into sainthood pronto. never has such sacrifice been compensated with such a derisory reward.

Love love love this book!!! I’ve loved it since I was young! Of course the green ribbon girl is my favorite story but I still love all of them! A great scary book for kids without giving them nightmares!!

I read this when I was 7, and I STILL remember the story "The Green Ribbon" clearly.

I checked this book out from my elementary school library more than any other. I think this is the one that sparked my love for ghost stories and ghosts in general.

I bought this last year so I could read it out loud to my son when he got a little older. I borrowed it from the library a couple times when I was a wee one. Today seemed like a good time to read it to him since it's gloomy out and he's home sick.
Anyway, my son was too busy jumping around so I read it to myself. This book contains seven ghost stories told in a style suitable for young readers. I was in first grade when I read it so that gives you an idea of the reading level.
The Green Ribbon is still my favorite almost forty years after I first read it. Her head falls off when the green ribbon is removed. Who doesn't love that? The Night it Rained is another favorite. "But our son has been dead for over a year," etc.
Dirk Zimmer's art is creepy but not super creepy. I'm glad this edition still uses the art from the 1984 edition.
Four out of five stars. I'll be glad to read it to my son when he's not too busy bouncing around the living room.

This was one of the books that was circulated among the kids in my grade back when I was in school. EVERYONE read the three volumes over and over. The stories were sometimes funny, but the illustrations were truly creepy. They still give me the jeebee geebees *shudders*
