Grew up with the original 1984 version and its spooky illustrations. Just bought an ebook copy of the reillustrated edition to share with the kids. Still has fun illustrations, but they are definitely in a different style. I would almost say a little less spooky.

"The Green Ribbon" is by far my favorite of the stories. "In a Dark, Dark Room" and "The Night it Rained" are close seconds, although every story is pretty great in my opinion.

Probably my introduction to horror movies when I was younger. This book will always hold a special place in my heart.

I read this book when I was really young, & I enjoyed it. My favorite short story in this book was "The Green Ribbon". If you take off my choker, my head will fall off, too. <3

This + Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark (also by Alvin Schwartz) thrilled and terrified me as a child. I still shudder at the story of the green ribbon.

Saw someone dressed as Jenny from "The Green Ribbon" for Halloween and viscerally recalled the fear of reading this book as a kid. It spooked me then and I love how fun and creepy it is now! I love the genre of horror within readers for kids who want something scary but aren't ready for Goosebumps yet. Nightmarish AND developmentally appropriate!
