"It was just another of those sharp shards of bigotry you find when you run your fingers across the Canadian mosaic." (186)

Indigenous history in North America is depressing. There's frankly no way to sugar coat the atrocities, prejudice and violence that persist even to this day. Despite the subject matter, King's use of humour in this thorough account doesn't sugar coat the gut punches, rather it goes a good job in highlighting the injustices in an engaging matter. Would highly recommend, especially for us settlers on unceded lands.

Other than small narrative issues I found that this book very well done. King is unapologetic in his selection of accounts of First Nations-white relations in Canada and Native American-white relations in America. The great horrors that he discusses are handled with a satirical voice, allowing readers to stomach all that he presents. It's an outstanding and undeniably important work.

Thomas King skillfully explains the gross injustices perpetrated against the First Nations in North America over the last several hundred years (and continuing to this day). He does it in a casual, easily ingestable style, often using sarcasm (I don't blame him). I learned alot and feel sick about the crimes we have committed against these people groups in the arrogant name of capitalism and Christianity. If you like books with happy endings, this ain't it. Never-the-less, the truth can hurt and this is a must read for all Canadians (and Americans). I highly recommend the illustrated edition.

This was excellent. It was interesting, engaging, and opinionated without being narrow-minded. There is so much to gain with this book. I now need to take my time and deconstruct and digest it.....thought provoking for sure. Highly recommend.

I learned about a lot of situations that I had never heard of, and more facts about familiar events thanks to this book.
