Since this is near the beginning of the series, it's going to have some shaky ground. I don't think Nesbø has quite settled down as to what his style would be just yet, since this is pretty different from Snowman. My biggest problem was the overuse of flashbacks. Just kept things confusing for me. On to the next one.

So much better than the first two Harry Hole novels. Amazing, nuanced, page-turner. Still seeming super sketchy/misogynistic as far as killing female characters, but with the possibility of a female character who will last into the next book.

I enjoy detective fiction. However once a writer starts making a serial instead of a series it loses my interest. For me each book should be able to stand alone. Setting up unsolved crimes for future book sales is not interesting to me and does put me off future "episodes".

Thoroughly enjoyed this one.. quite a mammoth read in a week for me but definitely kept the pages turning. A few times I had to search back into pages I had read to remind my self of the characters and elements of the plot which was fairly complex in some ways. I loved the interplay of characters though which added to the intrigue of the plot. Going to and fro between the past and the present also made for attentive and interesting reading. I do like Harry too.. he’s a likeable kind of guy in many ways. Don’t know if I would like him in real life but as a reader I really like him which adds to the whole experience for me.

Slow starting book with a lot of character introductions, but great finish! It definitely reels you in.

Initially thought the narrative was way too complicated, but there was a moment in the climax where all that intricate plotting came together, and it worked. Masterful!

This is my third Nesbo book. I read The Snowman and The Leopard. I think he is a fanatstic writer. He really takes care to complete the story and all of its ins and outs. Sometimes drawing it out a bit too much. I tried Redbreat because I was hoping for something a little different earlier in the series. The formula was getting repetitive. Nesbo's later books have a handful of plausible suspects they end up apprehending and then you find out it isn't that person over and over and then the final person is someone you kind of suspected all along. Redbreat didn't have the cast of suspects but the premise used a standard go to **spolier alert** split personality disorder. I liked meeting Racquel for the first time and understanding better why Hole felt so responsible for the harm he brought those closest to him.

I am never disappointed by Jo Nesbø's books. This was really exciting and the memories from the war and the happenings in the present mixed up and created the best harmony. Also the psychological aspect of the book is fascinating too.

So many twists and turns! Loved reading this book, although I don't read that many mysteries so I can't really attest to its quality in the scheme of things.
