A mystery based on love, betrayal, family traditions and family secrets. Searching for Sylvia Lee has all the basic components to be entertaining.

Amy’s successful, smart, older sister Sylvie goes missing after her trip to the side of their dying grandmother in Holland.

I respect and understand the authors motivation to write the story. I enjoyed the reflection of immigration in the voices of the characters, though there were some inconsistencies. This was a book club read and in a period with a drought of good discussion reads so it’s a welcome reprieve.
I found Amy’s growth semi believable, but it fit with the story.

Was looking forward to this book and it did not disappoint! It was beautiful, touching, and real!
Being a Chinese descendant myself, I always gravitate towards books with Chinese culture or immigrant story theme. I kept guessing until the end what actually happened with Sylvie Lee. I didn't try to guess much because a lot of other things were happening as well that distracted me from the need to keep guessing.

This was an easy and, somewhat, enthralling read as I wandered the streets of Buenos Aires. I find all of Kowk's [female] characters to have frustratingly low self-esteem and over superficial things too.

This was a really good book, but I feel like it was held back by clunky translations. There is a lot of subplot and fillers that overlap that can make the story kind of confusing. I personally felt that it all tied together nicely, but there was some stuff that was just a little.....Yikes but to be honest this doesn't even come close to being most fucked up book I've read

  • Plot- or character-driven? Plot
  • Strong character development? No
  • Loveable characters? No
  • Diverse cast of characters? Yes
  • Flaws of characters a main focus? Yes
I debated giving it a .25 star rating because I was interested in what happened to Sylvie but the end was just. so bad.
she killed herself because she was in love with her cousin who was actually her brother. They were fine with the cousins thing but she drew the line at siblings. He was still trying to be with her after they found out but she was like “no, you’re finally telling the truth you can’t lie about this” and then drove into the water??? yeah
