Didn't have much flare compared to the Yee books but this is a good addition to the mythos. The banter between Gyatso and Roku were my favorite parts and their friendship were the strongest parts of the book.

I love that it is closer to the tone of ATLA and it is a nice break from how dark the Kyoshi and Yangchen novels got. I do love the bit of
Kyoshi that appeared in this and I especially love how her acts of killing implied her character's flaws.

I do wish there was more. Roku wasn't much of an interesting character in ATLA and it didn't improve much in this one. A part of Sozin was right in that even when finally felt attuned to himself, it wasn't anything as unique as Yangchen, Kuruk, Kyoshi, Aang, and Korra.

But perhaps some Avatars were meant for averageness 🤷‍♂️

As a fan of the Avatar Animated TV series (both TLAB and LOK) and the other Chronicles of the Avatar Books by FC Yee, I can’t deny it feels good to be back in the world. Unfortunately, this entry felt very underdeveloped and the pacing jostled between being slow as molasses and at times feeling rushed. Sometimes the fan service was appreciated, other times felt heavy handed and unnecessary. Will I keep reading every one of these that comes out? Yes. Will they be at the top of my TBR? Probably not. If they continue with Roku, I hope Randy Ribay answers some of the back story questions his novel opened up. (When and how he was discovered as the Avatar by the Fire Sages, twin dynamics- especially with one Avatar and one non-Avatar, why he didn’t go into the Avatar state when [spoiler], when he gets his dragon, and more…)

Simply not as good as Yee’s books. It’s enjoyable but the gap is WIDE
