Great book, even had some familiar characters and a very interesting story line for this Universe. I'm interested to see where they go with it.

Better than Yangchen, worse than Kyoshi

Nice comeback for the series. Yangchen was done dirty sorry. This goes back to the style of the first two Kioshi books. While reading it I rewatched the original series episode that features Roku. Some small things were changed, but for the benefit.
The action was well paced and interesting enough. Though the tendency still seems to be to have some cheesy moments. Very YA, which I am not that much a fan of. But it did balance it well with some more serious scheming setup, that I am looking forward to reading the pay off for in the the next installment of the series.

not bad, the characters are decent and the uncharted island plot line is interesting enough. some disorganized thoughts:

the beginning is incredibly clunky for some reason

I miss fc yee’s attention to detail and the depth of cultural representation he would go to

malaya’s death was genuinely unexpected and unfortunately I guess her and gyatso will never go anywhere

a past avatar showing up near the end of these books is getting a little predictable at this point but it still works on me. i think the reason given that kyoshi stopped prolonging her life is interesting and i enjoyed seeing how she had flaws until the end

the main annoyance i had with this book was that it doesn’t really do any development towards the state of the world we see in atla. in fact, it kind of strangely starts there already— gyatso hates the fire nation for reasons I don’t understand, since they haven’t really done anything yet, and sozin is already evil, which just feels like a missed chance for an interesting corruption arc and makes his friendship with roku not that believable and the betrayal we know is coming a little more predictable

This is exactly why Roku was soft when it came to Sozin, like we been knew but this book confirms it

was honestly a bit hesitant to read this since I didn’t have too much interest in roku and it was a different author from kyoshi and yangchen’s novels, but I was pleasantly surprised and just as enthralled with roku’s novel, and especially his friendship with gyatso, can’t wait for the next one

really interesting concept, but the execution was lacking. i think maybe the book gets spread too thin with the number of narrators. i also don’t think it added meaningfully to the lore in the same way that kyoshi and yangchen did. it doesn’t help that roku was already a deeply unpopular avatar and this book doesn’t really make me more sympathetic to him. i’ll withhold total judgement until the sequel but so far this is definitely my least favorite avatar chronicles novel

Great addition to the Avatar series. Love the connections to AtLA and getting to see this start of Roku’s journey. Would recommend this as a good read for anyone looking to expand beyond the universe presented in the shows
