I picked this up at the library without any other reason than it had a really pretty shiny gold design on the cover. I started to read it but couldn't get far at first because reading about a mother who lost her daughter was too hard after another school shooting. Eventually I picked it up again, thank you for long library loans, and liked it ok. It reminded me a little of [b:The Starless Sea|43575115|The Starless Sea|Erin Morgenstern|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1617715077l/43575115._SY75_.jpg|66444785] even though they weren't much alike, because of the way I got a little lost in the layers of the world.

I was confused throughout I wont lie lol

I also felt the illustrations didn't match the pages so that was confusing me too

The story was sweet, a mother trying to "bring back" her child that has passed on and doing everything to make sure that this happened etc but yeah I dunno I struggled to get into it :/

I think maybe I just... didn't get this? The book is a modern-day fairy tale, taking the tale of King Orfeo (which in turn is inspired by Orpheus and Eurydice) and turning it into a story about a woman grieving the loss of her daughter, and just how far she'll go to find her again. The problem is, I found it hard to follow the logic of the story and understand why certain things happened the way they did.

Still, the writing is lovely, and the black and white illustrations throughout are absolutely gorgeous.

I'm sad to say that in concept, this story had all the whimsy and magic I wanted, but in execution, it felt really lacklustre and surface level. I know that this is a novella, and that the author wanted to focus more on the writing of beautiful descriptions and verses, but this just didn't do it for me. The fact that I clearly see the author's vision, and the themes she wanted to explore and make you experience throughout the story, they just didn't feel heartfelt or genuine. I think this book could've done with a little more emotional connection in the writing, and less focusing on just using pretty flowery words to make the story seem more magical and whimsical.

I have to give credit where credit is due to the wonderful design elements of this book-- the illustrations were gorgeous! But sadly that didn't make me love the book.

She has a good handle on how to make a vibe but holy shit, she dropped not only the ball, but her brain

This book is EXACTLY the perfect faerie vibe. Mirrormask mixed with Labyrinth mixed with Doors of Chaos mixed with that cozy booth curated by a retired self taught hobby artist with a garden and a daughter at the indoor flea market. It reads more like a fever dream than having a gripping plot, but Faerie is supposed to feel that way, and I have a feeling it's the kind of book that you can reread over and over and it never gets old. Inspiring illustrations as well.
