I’ve enjoyed getting to know Kate Burkholder but these stories are starting to sound too similar. There’s no incentive to continue the series

I really enjoy these books even though sometimes they are a little formulaic.

Linda Castillo is a very talented author and I love this series. I enjoy the main characters and the fact that they are flawed and haunted by personal demons. It makes them more relatable. One would expect it to be difficult to keep the series fresh and engaging given the setting in a community most would consider safe, but the stories told never become redundant and touch on sensitive topics that anyone can face. I would definitely recommend this book and series to those who enjoy thrillers and mysteries.

I didn’t realize this book was part of a series until after I read it but it did not change the book for me. I did not feel as if I were missing anything in the book. This is an incredible book! There are a lot of plot twists right up until the end. This book is very well written and keeps you guessing.

A Gathering of Secrets
4 Stars
Chief of Police Kate Burkholder is called in to investigate a barn fire on an Amish farm that soon turns out to be a case of arson and murder. The victim, an apparently hard-working and well-liked young Amish man seems an unlikely target. Yet, the more Kate reveals about his personality and life, the clearer the motive becomes.
The mystery is engaging with several compelling twists and turns although the actual explanation is not all that surprising. The motive for the murder is thought-provoking as it emphasizes the problems inherent to a patriarchal and segregated community, in which justice often eludes victims of heinous crimes.
There are also developments in Kate and John's personal life as well and it wonderful to see them functioning as a unit both personally and professionally. They have come a long way and found that communication is the key to a healthy relationship.
All in all, a solid addition to an excellent series.
