I love the story. I wish we had more Etta and Nicholas moments. I did not really like the end. I wish the epilogue was a glimpse in Etta's and Nicholas' future. But overall the conclusion to the Passenger series was full of drama, mystery, and beautiful/ sad moments.

Alexandra Bracken dedicates this duology to those who history as forgotten - and she did them justice! The diversity in this novel was excellent. I always love historical fiction with a diverse cast of characters. Speaking of which, the characters - I adored them. Sophia was an easy favorite.
The pacing was slow at time, but frankly, I didn't mind much. Bracken writes every sentence so beautifully that I didn't mind the slow pace.

Divos vārdos: man patika labāk nekā pirmā daļa. Neilgi pirms beigām kļuva smagnēja, nelasījās, bet beigas atkal bija interesantas.

-I liked it but not much more than passenger
-I was kind of disappointed because it took 400 PAGES FOR ETTA AND NIC TO BE IN A SCENE TOGETHER AND ETTA DIDN'T EVEN TRY TO SAY HELLO. I get the "gotta be secretive shit" but seriously? YOU CAN GET AROUND GRANDDADDY IF YOU REALLY WANT!
-I LOVED. no, ADORED the father daughter relationship that developed between Etta and Henry (get it, Henrietta)
-when he said he was Etta's father i laughed and thought: "wow. if rose is gonna fall in love and get pregnant, then it's gonna be with the leader of a time traveler group"
-Henry was so sweet and protective. I'm so glad he gets to spend time with Etta 'cause he just found her and then they got separated AGAIN.
-Sophia's character development was great. she was so sassy and feministic. I LOVED IT!
-she and Ming Lin definitely are a thing, and half married already. you cannot convince me otherwise.
-I liked the Julian we saw, but the stories about him were so different from the one Etta saw. coincidence or learning from his mistakes????
-that scene with his nan I TEARED UP.
-I teared up at the end when Rose almost died and Etta was struggling and Nic broke the thingy and send everyone to their time period. it hurt. A. L O T.
-that last scene though, with Etta playing and her parents saw her and SO DID NIC #tears #sobeautiful
-the last LAST scene between little rose and Etta (I think?) it was interesting placed, but I liked it...?
-Etta and Nic are cannon and they're getting their happiness in the 21st century (I hope)
-Cyrus Ironwood acted so much kinder to Nic when he decided to be heir....it was borderline creepy
-I love the Etta x Julian friendship
-I love the Sophia x Nic friendship

This book is so frustrating. I wanted to love it. Everyone else does. And these books are just beautiful!! I just could not get into it at all. I thought it was slow and highly underwhelming. It was really hard to finish it. I wasn't the biggest fan of Passenger, but I thought this would change my feelings of the series. But it did not, sadly. Bummer.
The setting was so interesting, and that's why it frustrates me because I just wanted to really enjoy it. I liked Etta's character, and I liked Nicholas. But overall, just not a fan of this one.

The first one was better than this one but I think I feel that way because there wasn't much romance in it. The plot was good and the twists were fun to follow. It had more action in the sequel which allowed for a faster read.

This is the sequel to Passenger and it took a very fantastical turn. I think this book was way too long. It took forever to get through and it wasn't good enough to have spent all that time.

Remember that time last year when I read an absolutely wonderful YA timetravel novel? I loved it. I raved about it! And then I had to wait for the second installment to see what would become of my beloved characters and their quest to destroy the astrolabe and save all humanity from the treacherous clutches of the Ironwoods.
So twelve months later we receive the second (and final installment) of the Passenger duology - Wayfarer.
And I'm not sure about you, but I found Wayfarer to be totally unsatisfying.
Before everyone jumps ship and flips me the bird, please let me be clear; I love this duology. I really liked Wayfarer, but I did not love the book in the same way I loved Passenger.
Here's why:
These books should have been part of a trilogy. A duology is not enough pages to adequately tell this story and keep everyone excited. I think a trilogy would have offered a better story arc and all of the questions would have been answered.
Alex Bracken - why did you not make this a trilogy? I wish you had, but I digress.
Wayfarer begins where Passenger leaves off. Sophia and Nicholas have found themselves separated from Etta who has disappeared in a wrinkle and is now in an alternate timeline. While Nicholas and Sophia are determined to locate Etta and correct the timeline, Etta has found herself captured by the Thorns who are led by her father, Henry Hemlock. Like everyone else, the Thorns are searching the Astrolabe - a magical apparatus that can create new passages in the timeline. Armed with the knowledge that the Thorns are looking for same thing she is, Etta decides to work with her father to locate the astrolabe instead of looking for Nicholas! Meanwhile, sweet Nicholas is desperate to find Etta which leads him on his own journey through time.
Etta and Nicholas are apart for about 90% of the book - sorry folks. I believe that this will be the primary complaint from those who were fans of the first book in the duology because it's what made the dynamics of the first volume work! People want to see Nicholas and Etta chasing the astrolabe together! While each character is on their own journey and it all works out in the end, I really wanted to see them find eachother much sooner than they did. Authors take note, please do not have your main characters apart for the ENTIRE book, it's not cool.
So while I really wanted the romantc elements to be in the book I have to give credit for the historical story telling. The historical elements and creation of the alternate timeline was amazing. I really enjoyed those aspects of the story and I know that this part of the book is what the author is really passionate about. It's very well written, easy to follow and entertaining.
Character development was good - we see a lot of growth from Nicholas and Sophia. Not as much from Etta - she's still kind of a hot head. Another reason I wished we had a trilogy - I feel that there is so much more to be explored with these characters. Especially supporting characters like Rose, Henry, Li Min and the Belladonna. But I'll take what I can get, I suppose.
Despite the obvious holes in the plot and the unsatisfying relationship stuff, I will grant that the book was well written, offers a tidy ending that readers will appreciate but overall it was much weaker than the first novel.
Have you read this? If you're a fan of Passenger, did you think Wayfarer stood up to the hype?
