Ugh, this just didn't work for me. To be honest, I only picked it up because other books in the series sounded good, and I hate reading things out of order, but I shouldn't have bothered. There was seriously no chemistry between the MCs, and the author seemed most concerned about making sure we never forgot that the heroine was overweight rather than make an interesting story.
I usually stay away from books that make a big deal about proclaiming to have a "curvy" heroine, and this book is the perfect example why. For some reason, anytime a heroine has a BMI over 25, she becomes this ridiculous caricature, where her weight isn't a physical attribute, but rather the entire sum of her personality. It's the really the worst kind of pandering.
So as our stereotypical BBW heroine, Tammy talks about food and eating all the time. Enter a kitchen? Well, she has to mentally comment how she's more likely to appreciate a good one because she loves to eat. Break up with a boyfriend? Let's have a steak, and some ice cream, and a huge list of other things, even though they aren't important to the story - but the author wants you to remember she's fat, and you might forget otherwise. And let's not forget the subtle body shaming of women who don't wear a large clothing size. Tammy has to constantly point out that she eats lots of great food and "skinny" women only eat salads. Ugh, bad, just bad.
And of course Tammy needs constant validation that she's attractive despite the fact that Reid gives no indication that her weight is a problem. It's irritating. Not to mention how she has to get all giddy when Ursa calls her "wee" or when Reid can lift her up despite how heavy she is. Seriously, if your weight bothers you, do something about it. If it doesn't, than stop talking about it! The author made it very clear what Tammy's size was in the first chapter. We didn't need any of this extra garbage.
And the piece de resistance of every single romance with a fat heroine?
Girl: You find me attractive even though I'm so fat?
Boy: Of course. I don't want some skinny girl that's all bones. I want something to hold on to.
Girl:gush
Bleh. Let's just insult all the other women. That'll work. /s Why do authors try to gain readership this way? Want to write a fat girl? Fine. Just make her weight one of her features, not her defining characteristic. It takes away from the story.
End rant

Read the holiday novella in this series as part of an anthology and was curious about the other characters mentioned. Fast read, slightly silly, but fun overall. I don't think Reid and Tammy will be my favorite pair though - the next couple of fox and moose sounds much more improbable and interesting!

I liked seeing the extra animals, foxes, moose, polar bears etc, but I think a lot of the humour used was a little too much for me and I didn't like the ending. It was a fun read, and I liked it but I didn't particularly love it. I'll be reading on for aborts and Jan because he's a moose and I've ever read one of them, but if I decide not to continue I'll be moving on to Bitten Point

I absolutely adored Kodiak's Claim! What more can a reader ask for than a hot hero, a realistic heroine, a bit of suspense and some hot sex?! Nothing...you can ask for nothing more.
Tammy just needs to verify an insurance claim from Reid's company. One missing truck is one thing. But several? That's suspicious. Heading off to the wilds of Alaska is just another day on the job for her but meeting the mysterious Reid makes it all worth it. Even if it's just for a few days, getting close to the man may be just what Tammy needs after booting her no good cheating ex to the curb.
The tiny human should not be peeking the interest of the alpha to his clan and yet that is just what's she's doing. Reid can't seem to get his mind off Tammy and with someone targeting his clan and his business, she's the last thing he needs to be thinking about. Yet when someone puts her in the cross hairs Reid's every protective fiber flares violently to life. He may not be able to tell her he's a kodiak bear, but he'll use every instinct, bear and human, to keep his woman safe.
Every book I pick up by Langlais delivers and leaves me aching for more by the end. Kodiak's Claim was no different. Reid and Tammy together just worked so well. I loved Tammy's feisty attitude and Reid definitely gave as good as he got. I found myself chuckling through many a scene and then sighing in contentment at many others. Tammy can certainly wield a frying pan unlike anyone else I've seen. :) I also love the fact that she's a normal sized woman with curves. It's not often that I feel like I can connect with a character as much as I did Tammy. I felt like she could be me and I love any author who can make me feel like that.
I loved the bit of suspense layered expertly into the humor and the awakening emotions. The overall story arc concerning the return of someone long thought dead should carry easily into book two.
I can't wait for the next book in this new series to come out! Because, well...the hero is a MOOSE. A MOOSE! I highly enjoy the variety of shifters in Langlais' world and I can't wait to see what a big....rack he has!
I give Kodiak's Claim by Eve Langlais 4.50 stars!

Perfect
Love this book so much. I cannot wait to continue on with the series. While this couple’s story is over, there is an overall arc to the series that’s not complete and will have you biting at the bit to see what happens next.

I loved this book. A great way to listen all the way to Memphis. So many twists and turns not to mention the sexual tension between the Kodiak Reed and Tamara. It was so awesome. I loved the ending.

Oh man, I love grumpy bears!! This is great start to the series, which is sure to be a must buy!
Reid is deliciously Alpha and cluelessly male! He tries to fight the attraction, some silly shifter human no-no nonsense. Thank fully he just can not resist sassy curvy gal Tammy. I love their banter and the whole dynamic they share. Beware frying pans! LOL
The love comes fast here, but it is a true mates kind of thing, so I guess I buy into it. I can see it growing from the affection that is apparent and the combustible chemistry they share. There is plenty of hawt and heavy steam to get your engines revved!! Have a bowl of ice cream, a cold shower or your fella handy! Whoa mamma, things are definitely detailed and smexy!
The narrative is mixed giving you the POV of the leads as well as the bad guy. I am not sure about how awful he really is, something that might show itself later in the series. The side plot is a bit murky. I could see where things were headed, but they were too vague at times. I expect that is to keep suspense for things to come. I did enjoy the plot and the get together for the couple, it was just too short. I wanted more of the build for the resolution, maybe later.
I listened to the audiobook narrated by Chandra Skyye, who was fabulous. I loved her energy through the read and the life she gave the characters. Her tone was perfect for delivering the snappy snarky dialogue. She kept the men just gruff enough to be real without going into the realm of caricature. Her pace is nice if you like to listen at regular speed, I like to punch things up to double, where things are still enjoyable. I will definitely be looking for more of her reads and hope she stays with the series.
I am so very thrilled to see this author in audio, because I really miss reading her books! I wish I had more ebook time, but now I only have to worry about how fast they will be recorded!
*** I hope this review was useful to you and helped your decision to read or not read this book. I love reading and sharing my opinions with other readers. I listen at double speed; all my impressions of the narration are from that setting. Thanks for taking the time to read my review! Okay. Really nothing stood out for this were-story. Liked it enough to finish and filled the time.
Chubby chick with no fear, even when she should, and sleeps with hot client while investigating insurance claim.
Alpha male who both tells her he can't end up with her and has unprotected sex with her without checking if she is on the pill even after she claimed to be between boyfriends and packed light for a trip. He growls a lot.
Average story from an above average writer, so good if you want an alpha male story.
First of a series, so picked up while free on Amazon. (Marketing technique - first book of series is free so you buy the rest.)
