I LOVE THIS.
This was a lovely quick read. It wasn't what I expected, but not in a bad way. The way in which Jackson uses horror/terror is truly unique. She quite cleverly withholds details allowing the reader to fill in the gaps with their own imagination, which is one of my favorite devices. This was on my list for a long time and I'm glad I finally got around to it.
I like Haunting of Hill House the more I sit with it. I came to the book the way I think a lot of recent adopters did through the Netflix series. Up front I knew the series was inspired by and not a one to one retelling but I liked that. It was fun finding parts in the book that were translated into shows or films. As for the book itself I like how Jackson utilizes the unreliable narrator, she doesn't try to lead you too far one way or the other and keeps a lot open for interpretation. At the end of the day I think it's up to the reader how they want to decipher the narration but it's definitely a book that sticks with you for awhile.
Devastating portrayal of loneliness. But I wish it was a little scarier

Read this in my community college "Horror in Literature" class.
A really great and spooky novel, finely written with compelling, memorable characters.
