This is considered one of the best ghost stories ever written???? The phrase “journeys end in lovers meeting” is used 14 times! There are far fewer paranormal events than I would have expected. The vast majority of the story was insane, rambling, word vomit.
“She had awakened with the thought of going down to the library, and her mind had supplied her with a reason: I cannot sleep, she explained to herself, and so I am going downstairs to get a book. If anyone asks me where I am going, it is down to the library to get a book because I cannot sleep”
That reads like a student trying to reach the word count on a paper before turning in to the teacher.
It just wasn’t for me.

What a classic haunted house story! I made the mistake of reading this before bed and it made me 1) jump everytime I heard a noise 2) dash to the bathroom and back cos I was scared 3) have mad dreams!!! Ended up reading the rest of the book only in the daytime.
My second Shirley Jackson book, and I enjoyed this much more than the one before! It was creepy, I had goosebumps, the flow was perfect from the get go, truly everything you can imagine being in a haunted house to be like. The only thing is it does read dated, so not a perfect 5 star :-)

Venía de leer Rebecca, así que mis expectativas eran muy altas…
I wanted to like it more because i liked We Have Always Lived in the Castle so much, but I found myself quite bored for most of it... the ending was a pretty shocking & disturbing but i really did not find any of the characters all that interesting and it just did not resonate with me very much
