my favourite so far!! they’re so grown now and the action was more intense with so many stakes. loved that hiccups mother was brought into this story and that fishlegs’ history is uncovered further. was already looking forward to reading about the jewel, and this did not disappoint

really good book - although i will say, the characters were all flawed.

to put it briefly:

tom. as much as i can emphathise with the difficulty and heartbreak and fear he would have experienced in his life, marion should not have been utilised as part of his game. no matter what love he had for her. no matter what he was afraid would happen to him. she did not deserve it.

patrick. he knew just as much as tom what was happening. he allowed for marion to be a little toy in their little web of lies. his passion and love is admirable, but it was not fair for her.

marion. despite everything, i cannot blame her for revealing the secret. i can blame her for continuing to protect tom after everything. after he failed to support her, continued to gaslight her out of fear - everything. she shouldn’t have stayed.

the reason for my 4 star review is simply because i want to save the 5 stars for the rest of the books in this series. this was such an amazing read - mysteries, romance, betrayal, bloodshed, somehow all at once. we hate who we love and love who we hate, and somehow that is everyone in this book. every character is flawed, but it makes them so much better.

cardan is not the cruel prince to me. although i do not yet know how much i will like him later on. but for now, he has a special place in my heart. the slow burn romance that is building up between him and jude is something i hope will blossom in the coming books.

this novella made me feel completely certain of my burning hatred towards locke. from the second we were introduced to him, i didn’t trust him and this just made it worse. taryn - i don’t know if i can find it in myself to pity and believe her ‘justifications’. she’s weak, even with the lessons she learnt, she is still too weak, too naive. i cant pity her blindness.

rating this 4 stars because it was simply just an answer to the one thing that was forgotten in the first book - who green growned taryn first? what’s the story? enjoyed reading this and devoured it in one sitting. this world has sucked me in.
