All these stories follow similar themes and people, almost all of them feature an affair and a lonely male protagonist. Ones that stuck out to me were Kino, Drive my car and Yesterday. But as a whole, the collection was just ok. Most of the stories just felt like different versions of eachother. And this being a Murakami book, the women were all written quite poorly.
Honestly I wasn't obsessed with this book in the beginning, but as the story developed I fell in love with this world and this book. The worldbuilding is intricate and detailed while staying comprehensible. Getting to follow Essun at different stages of her life and seeing her understanding of her world and her oppressors was just so genius! I loved this book.
It's very rare for me to dnf a book, but I didn't like this at all. It was really dull and dreary without much of a solid plot going on. There were way too many characters and perspectives for such a short book imo. But the worst part is the writing style. Sorry but every time I had to read the words "the older woman" instwad of the character's name I rolled my eyes. How am I suppossed to know who's older? It was so hard to keep track of everyone in this book and it just got exhausting.
