A Geek in Indonesia: Discover the Land of Komodo Dragons, Balinese Healers and Dangdut Music by Tim Hannigan
5.0
Excellent up to date snapshots of a modern, changing, vibrant, exciting Indonesia. I have visited, worked and lived in Indonesia for the past 22 years. In that time I have witnessed so much change. Much of it positive, other aspects less so. At times a challenging place, yet ultimately such a rewarding country. Tim Hannigan captures Indonesia in all its guises. The photos are excellent too. A great book.
The Racer: Life on the Road as a Pro Cyclist by David Millar
5.0
Blood, guts, glory, failure and triumph. Pro cycling is a world where success is borne of hard work, determination, team work, talent, a willingness to sacrifice and suffer and a good slice of luck.
David Millar's experienced and seen the lot. An excellent insight into the world of cycling we seldom see on the television.

1984 by George Orwell
5.0
You have to keep reminding yourself that Orwell's dystopian nightmare of a novel set in 1984 was written in 1948.
A cautionary tale of the power of the elite to twist, subvert, alter and erase the truth in order to establish, maintain and never surrender their power over those lesser than them...I read 1984 as a 15 year old. Re-reading at 50 years old shed a wholed different light on the world. Does such a foreboding, forbidding and terrible place exist in the world today? North Korea springs to mind. Just double-thinking out loud. Everyone should read this book.

Magic Spanner: The World of Cycling According to Carlton Kirby by Carlton Kirby
5.0
If you enjoy cycling, watching the Grand Tours, or just the Tour de France, Carlton Kirby is a voice synonymous with the world of professional cycling.
The man on commentary, who sustains a continuous stream of comment, opinion, anecdote, interesting facts, the odd joke and humorous aside, as well as explaining what is happening in the race, the stage profile, the tactics and machinations - often for hours at end.
But so much goes on between stages. The world of cycling broadcasting when the mics are switched off.
At last, Carlton Kirby has revealed all. Literally. To some Japanese. But read the book....
Full of insight, forthright opinion, funny stories tales of Sean Kelly's driving. A very enjoyable book.
To some people Carlton is a love/hate figure. Which he addresses. A Marmite man.
I like Marmite.

Powerful, harrowing and compelling. From the absolute depths of humanity to the resolve of the human spirit to overcome everything, in the quest for survival and for love. A remarkable book.
