You have to keep reminding yourself that Orwell's dystopian nightmare of a novel set in 1984 was written in 1948.
A cautionary tale of the power of the elite to twist, subvert, alter and erase the truth in order to establish, maintain and never surrender their power over those lesser than them...I read 1984 as a 15 year old. Re-reading at 50 years old shed a wholed different light on the world. Does such a foreboding, forbidding and terrible place exist in the world today? North Korea springs to mind. Just double-thinking out loud. Everyone should read this book.
