Wow. I chose to read this book after Heir of Fire (book 3) because I read that is was the “romantic” way of reading the series. However, I think by romantic they meant heartbreaking.

I heavily contemplated reading this book because I was anxious to see where Celaena’s story goes after HoF and I didn’t want to spend time reading a book that wouldn’t continue on that journey - also I wanted more Rowan...But, I am SO glad that I did. The way the SJM writes is incredible. The dialogue, Easter eggs, character development and little details are amazing. Some parts of this books had me SOBBING because I knew what was coming and was hoping that maybe, just maybe, those awful things wouldn’t happen.

These 5 novellas flow so well together. You really would believe it was written as one book.

If you don’t want as much heartbreak, I recommend reading The Assassin’s Blade first. While you will likely still be sad, you won’t have developed emotions for some of the characters. But, I am glad I read it in this order. Now onto reading about Celaena SLAYING ⚔️ her enemies to hopefully get some revenge for sweet baby angel Sam.

This was one of his better books! I felt the twists were really unexpected and they just kept coming. I listened to this one as an audiobook and really struggled with the reader.
