I could not put this book down, and with everything that’s on my plate most of the time, that’s saying something. I love that it’s clearly scifi/fantasy with high tech and magic. I also love the action. There was constantly some action moment to look forward to. The main character could get a bit annoying with her intent on revenge, but I get it. Revenge and grief are intense combinations, and she handled them in the best way she knew how. I also love how the author handled the “chosen one” characterization. We know the MC is special, but she is never just special on her own. She is connected to the spiritual and the ancestral alongside her friends. She is gifted, which means she did not become this special being alone. Lastly, I loved the mystery aspect of the book. I figured out some of it along the way before the reveal, but there were some twists and turns I wasn’t expecting. There’s also one I’m waiting on that I hope will come up in book 2!

I read this book when it first came out and when the sequel came two years later, my TBR pile was so long that I forgot to finish the series. I loved revisiting this story, and I think I have a much larger appreciation for it now that the majority of my reading catalogue is SFFH by BIPOC authors. I can’t wait to (finally) read book 2!
